For me, zero.

Also zero for me: the number of people I personally know who have:
  • died from a heart attack in the last 6 months
  • died of cancer in the last 6 months
  • died of a stroke in the last 6 months
  • died of Alzheimer's disease in the last 6 months

The last 6 months has been safer for the 18-24yo. Being stuck inside means they have have fewer opportunities to die in pointless ways.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

RoGeorge:
You will not get any useful information from that survey. The sample size is too small.

And even if it wasn’t the case, the question itself is wrong. SARS-CoV-2 is not dangerous due to the number of people it already killed. In fact it barely surpassed seasonal flu at the end of June. The virus is dangerous due to its potential to kill large number of people and disrupt economy if no preventive measures are taken.

People imagine AI as T1000. What we got so far is glorified T9.

Hmm, so far ~25% of respondents state they know someone who died.  That is more than I would have thought.

Maybe this anecdote will add context.  Two days ago I saw a car with a wounded, combat veteran plate (Ohio).  Of course, it had a Purple Heart on it, which is what first drew my attention.   It was being driven by an elderly gentleman, so I assumed Vietnam.  Now, while the war raged and many Americans served, we saw a few of those plates then.  That is the first I have seen in several years.

304,000 Americans were wounded in Vietnam.  135,400 have died with Covid-19 (we know that number is probably exaggerated).  There are over 300 million Americans.  I am not surprised that almost 74% of those who have responded have not known a single Covid-19 death.

likwise for the UK, we have a record death rate but it is minuscule population wise. My neighbors uncle died of it, that is as "close" as i come.

Also, I know someone who got the disease very badly, but did not die.

~40 years old, healthy, works out at gym twice weekly, barely drinks, never smokes.

Completely knocked him out, and he was "ventilation assistance" for about two weeks (I think that's the stage before they knock you out and put you on a proper ventilator.)  Says he still feels some symptoms now (can't run as fast/far as he used to), but is mostly back to normal.

I think it's pretty far from a random sample of which EEVBlog readers will click through a post with that subject line and, of those, who will choose to respond to the poll.

The topic is indeed pointless as it is a uncontrolled "study" that anyone from any country with varying infection rates can answer.

I am of the generation that knew polio first hand.  Fortunately, iron lungs are no longer in existence.  I'll bet few here have actually seen one working.  I have.

Count your friend lucky.  I am 77, and survival at the stage of needing a ventilator is low.  So low, that I might invoke my living will and refuse.  Supplemental oxygen would, of course, be indicated as well as immuno-modulators to try to suppress self-destruction of my lungs.
