Title: How many COVID-19 deceased do you knew personally?
Post by: RoGeorge on July 12, 2020, 09:37:00 pm
By 'personally knew deceased' I mean people with whom you exchanged at least a handshake or a voice spoken "hello", like a friend, a same building neighbor, a family member, a coworker, you got the idea.

Social media or TV people you never meet in person does not count.

No political speech, please.  Just vote the number.  You can give any details about the known victims in the comments, if you feel like.

Stay careful and respect the law.

LATER EDIT:

Changed the typo meat to meet.

Is "meating someone" how the young kids call it nowadays?

People you know may have passed away from Covid-19 and you wouldn't know it because the information may not be publicized and you aren't meating as many people these days.  I finally went out for a haircut after 3 months only to find my barber had died.  You won't know until a year from now when you head down the local watering hole hoping to meat someone and you find out that Covid got them.

Please don't get me wrong.  This is a genuine question.

There are many countries other than your own, each with its own being.  So before facepalm or guilt-trip everybody else, let's just stay to the subject, so we all know where we are at, by the saying of already known people.

Again, not trying to prove or disprove anything, so please everybody just let's put aside the emotions and stay to the facts.  Everybody will benefit from the facts.

Again, stay careful and legally.  Together we will get other it!   :-+

If one lives long enough, one has seen enough of similar questions to have reasonable expectations about what comes next. Even if your goals are genuinely different, you should understand why people are worried. Your question fits perfectly into a scenario, in which the manipulator abuses data to deceve victims into believing some phenomenon is unimportant(1) by misrepresenting the meaning of low probability events. Nearly all such questions end that way, so this is what people expect.

Nonetheless I have answered. Mostly to see how that develop.
____
(1) Replace with “not posing a risk”, “exaggerated by $GROUP” or whatever fits the situation.

Why pose such a question here?  I don't know anyone who has died and furthermore if you check Wikipedia in the obituaries it seems like Covid-19 doesn't effect the rich and famous.  Shew you evil flue.

The whole idea of proving the danger of Covid 19 this way is somewhat flawed . E.g. in Germany with about 83 Million inhabitants, around 9000 people died of Covid 19. The official relative death toll is 109 per million or one of ten thousand. So unless you know 10k persons personally, the chance of knowing one deceased personally is rather low. Besides, a high percentage died in nursery homes. So again, if you don't know a lot of people from nursery homes, your chances are rather low. Actually one of my relatives got Covid 19 in a nursery home where 12 of around 120 patients died. I visited this nursery home several times, my mother visited it very week until it was put under quarantine. There is not the slightest doubt that these 12 people died there even if I didn't know them personally. That's tragic and scary enough for me and I'm rather happy that I don't have any friend, colleague or relative who died of Covid 19. However, apart from that relative of mine, also one of my colleagues was tested positive. Again, that's close enough for me.
In a nutshell: be happy if nobody you know died of Covid 19 but that just proves that the the relative number of deceased is low enough to save you from this experience. Which is a good thing, isn't it?

I don’t know any. Numbers are worse in my area, but should I be surprised?

In my state there are 8310 reported deaths for a total population of about 6.9 million. That’s about 0.12% deaths.

In order for me to know at least one of them, I would have to know personally about 830 people. I believe I’m friendly and approachable, but I’m quite sure I don’t have that many friends and acquaintances.

According to this news article https://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/science/the-average-american-knows-how-many-people.html (https://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/science/the-average-american-knows-how-many-people.html), an average person knows about 600 people. I lived in 4 different states so far. Assuming I lived an equal amount of years in each of them (just for the sake of this back-of-the-envelope calculation) and I was equally friendly in each of them - I probably know about 150 people in my state. This number is about 5.5x smaller than 830, the number of people I should know in order to hear of one of them dying of COVID-19.

So no, I’m not surprised I don’t know any.

This all sounds like a good example of a cognitive bias where personal and anecdotal experience is valued over factual and statistical information.

Yep, I've been under many regimes in my life.  I know what statistics and media are saying.  Just want to know about your personally encounters.  Nothing more.  Not trying to prove or disprove anything.  Not interested in your country or regional statistics that are officially posted online, either.  This is all about personal encounters and personal experiences, please.

Just vote the correct number of people you knew in person, if you are kind enough, please.  Or just ignore this thread if you don't feel like getting the personal encountered numbers.  Thank you all.

None.

A couple of people in my family have had tests for Coronavirus and were found not to have it. I don't think anyone has had symptoms.

If it ever gets to a point where a large number of us personally know even one person who died from it we're going to be in a big mess. Just a rough guess is there are probably around 300 people I can count as acquaintances, ranging from family and close personal friends to people I worked with 15 years ago or went to school with who would remember who I was and say hi if I bumped into them someplace and that's probably fairly typical. We are thankfully orders of magnitude from 1 in 300 people dying from Covid. A few of my mother's friends have spent time in the ICU but I don't think any of them actually died yet.

Firstly I doubt much useful information will come from this topic; it will descend into the usual entrenched opinions.

Secondly, while it is easy to answer this question, it is probably not the right question.

A more useful question could, arguably, be framed around this article...

Coronavirus doctor's diary: Why are people remaining ill for so long?

Four months after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, doctors are still on a steep learning curve. One surprise is just how long symptoms seem to last, for some patients. Dr John Wright of Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) talks to two young women who are still tired and breathless many weeks after falling ill.
...
We know from studies of patients who had Sars - one of the family of coronaviruses - back in the 2003 epidemic, that almost half of survivors went on to have chronic fatigue or other long-lasting symptoms. So it should not be a surprise that this cunning descendant, Sars-CoV2, should have a similar inheritance.

We are getting an increasing number of desperate emails and letters from patients and their GPs asking for help. Some are still suffering from the original symptoms of chest pains and breathlessness. Others have newer symptoms - headaches, memory loss and visual problems. Many have depression and anxiety. Most of them have persistent, chronic fatigue. All of them want their previous lives back. They celebrated their initial Covid-19 survival in haste and some are now filled with nagging doubt and deepening despair.
...
"But it's really hard at the moment to tease apart what's to do with fatigue and emotional, or what might be more organic. It's too early to say."

Potentially one.
A distant relative of mine, who I'd not seen for some time, she got really sick and died in hospital early on in the outbreak.
When someone who was the same exact age as me, and healthy dies of a mysterious virus, it really hits home.
Yes they did conduct tests afterwards, but no telling if those would detect anything.

Good topic, had the same question in mind. I agree that it is not suitable to prove or disprove anything, as it just will be proportional to how many people you know and severity of the epidemic in a nation.

  • died of cancer in the last 6 months

RoGeorge:
You will not get any useful information from that survey. The sample size is too small.

And even if it wasn’t the case, the question itself is wrong. SARS-CoV-2 is not dangerous due to the number of people it already killed. In fact it barely surpassed seasonal flu at the end of June. The virus is dangerous due to its potential to kill large number of people and disrupt economy if no preventive measures are taken.

Hmm, so far ~25% of respondents state they know someone who died.  That is more than I would have thought.

Maybe this anecdote will add context.  Two days ago I saw a car with a wounded, combat veteran plate (Ohio).  Of course, it had a Purple Heart on it, which is what first drew my attention.   It was being driven by an elderly gentleman, so I assumed Vietnam.  Now, while the war raged and many Americans served, we saw a few of those plates then.  That is the first I have seen in several years.

304,000 Americans were wounded in Vietnam.  135,400 have died with Covid-19 (we know that number is probably exaggerated).  There are over 300 million Americans.  I am not surprised that almost 74% of those who have responded have not known a single Covid-19 death.

likwise for the UK, we have a record death rate but it is minuscule population wise. My neighbors uncle died of it, that is as "close" as i come.

Also, I know someone who got the disease very badly, but did not die.

~40 years old, healthy, works out at gym twice weekly, barely drinks, never smokes.

Completely knocked him out, and he was "ventilation assistance" for about two weeks (I think that's the stage before they knock you out and put you on a proper ventilator.)  Says he still feels some symptoms now (can't run as fast/far as he used to), but is mostly back to normal.

I think it's pretty far from a random sample of which EEVBlog readers will click through a post with that subject line and, of those, who will choose to respond to the poll.

I am of the generation that knew polio first hand.  Fortunately, iron lungs are no longer in existence.  I'll bet few here have actually seen one working.  I have.

Count your friend lucky.  I am 77, and survival at the stage of needing a ventilator is low.  So low, that I might invoke my living will and refuse.  Supplemental oxygen would, of course, be indicated as well as immuno-modulators to try to suppress self-destruction of my lungs.
