How much vacation do you take in December?

As a high school student, I have off next week

 We get Christmas Day and New Years Day off. Since I get 5 weeks of vacation and we have to use it or lose it, I turn the holiday days off into as much vacation as I can - this year with the holidays on a Monday it doesn't work out as well as some years, but my last day was the 15th and I go back the 2nd.

Last year I went home to NZ on December 13 and returned to work after the end of the Russian New Year holidays on January 9.

This year I'll start a longer NZ vacation with the 10 day Russian New Year break from December 30 to January 8 (inclusive), and then take 19 days of annual leave (out of 28 for the year) to return to work on February 5. Moscow really really sucks in January -- we had -28 C in two different weeks last year. So I'm learning to avoid it. December and February are nowhere near as bad ... in fact temperatures have been just above zero C most of this month. Warmer than October!

But December 25 is just another day here.

I'm low on the totem pole so never get vacation around Christmas time, and while I can get weeks in December, I tend to just take weeks at other times of the year.  I work shift work so I end up with lot of time off anyway throughout the year.  I have to work Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years Day this year.  It's good money though so can't really complain.  I can still show up to visit family for a few hours and have dinner before I head to my night shift.

Thankfully this year looks like it should be quiet.  Normally we have lot of winter storms at this time and it's super busy but so far it's too cold for storms.  Everything is frozen just how I like it.  I work in telecom.  Frozen cable pairs are happy cable pairs!

I typically take the week between Christmas and New Years off.  So I'll be in this Friday, then gone until Jan 2.

Payed holiday or unpaid? As I understand, getting a lot of payed holiday in the USA is a good deal, unlike Europe, where 20 days/year is the minimum.

Normally 3 days of that would be paid holiday (2 for Christmas, 1 for NY) and the other 3 would be paid personal time, but my company decided this year to just make all 6 days paid holiday.

You could plan a cozy winter getaway to the mountains for skiing or a warm escape to a tropical beach—both are great options for December. My winter holidays are usually spent relaxing at home or exploring new places with friends and family.

Due to the stacking of bank holidays and weekends, and the company having a formal policy of booking off the days from the end of the Christmas period to New Years, I usually end up taking off about two weeks.  I don't tend to go anywhere though!

I used to genmerally get to late November, realise I hadn't taken a single day off that year, and had far more vacation time accrued than I was allowed to roll over to the next year. So, I have taken a LOT of December days off in my working life.

My workplace gives us off between Christmas and new year. I always use the few days PTO it takes to get a full two weeks. This year I'm extending it by two days so off the 19th till the 6th.

As an Aussie, it's pretty traditional to take the week between Christmas and New Years off unless you work in retail/hospitality/health etc.

I tend to round it out to the weekends either side.

This year I'm on holidays/leave from the afternoon of the 20th until the morning of the 6th

The company i work at closes down before christmas, and reopens after new year.
Only high-impact maintenance work is done "between the days", and none of that for me this year.

So tomorrow will be my last working day this year, and i start again on the second.

I only take leave for the shutdown period.    Save the leave to go on holidays later in the year

I've thrown snowballs at Christmas in the tropics. It was in a refrigerated building, and the snow was synthesized, but I still did it.

Company wide shut down.  This year is Dec 23 to Jan 1.  After today (Fri Dec 20) I am off until Thursday, Jan 2.  I do not generally take extra time in December.  In the US, there is also a 2 day shutdown for Thankgiving that was only a few weeks ago.  Makes for a 4 day weekend.

Some may take extra vacation days before/after.  We sometimes have coworkers from India and they will sometimes take off a whole month (using some vacation time) around the shutdown to travel back to India to visit their relatives, etc.

Some companies won't let employees roll over vacation or holiday hours.  Use 'em or lose 'em!  December won't find very many people showing up to work.

     Thanks to pinching my sciatic nerve back on November 10th, 2024, in a really, really, really bad way, (non-stop pain like you wouldn't believe for 1 month straight)  I've been immobile for a month and now just rehabilitation.  I've only been able to begin to drive my car on short trips last week and I'm stuck exercising my right leg up until January.  I wouldn't call this a vacation and its screwed all my plans for this year and the beginning of next.

When I say pain, I couldn't even use a keyboard for around 10 days without feeling it...
