I have a YT channel with very few views and subscribers. I had earned $.029 when YT changed the rules. No big deal, I was doing YT as something to toy with after I retire. I really did not even try to understand how I was earning the money, but, the option was there so I said why not? I enjoy doing the videos and then seeing who comments and watches.

Now I am thinking of doing a channel and getting it monetized in earnest for some income. I have read articles and I saw Dave's video where he revealed his monetization screen, but I am confused as to how the ads make money for the channel. This article says that you only earn money if someone clicks the ad, why would anyone click the ads while viewing a video? I have occasionally clicked ads that interested me on the forum (you're welcome Dave), but I have never clicked a video banner ad that interrupted the video. The only reason that I click them is to to click the little "X" to close them and get them out of the way. Of course, there are the ones that run video ads and I click skip ad as quick as possible to get back to the video. Some may let the ads run?

Here is Dave's revealing video of his analytics for his channel:

His video was just an overview of how much money he makes and a brief explanation of how it works, without details.
So my question remains, is it clicks per view, or is it number of views versus time? Is it simply number of views?? Please can someone explain exactly how one makes money on YT?

It would be nice to see Dave do a breakdown and explanation of his revenue from YT, so that monetization is better explained.

I believe it's ad views. Whenever a full add is viewed (and not skipped) the bid for that add is given to Google and the YouTuber. I believe clicking also gives more revenue. I believe the per-view statistic is just a way to give an overview. I could also be wrong.

It is both. Youtube deliberately don't tell you so people can't game the system.
You get money per view, plus more money is someone clicks.

Here is the CPM data for the last month
There is no info on click earnings.

No youtuber will start to see serious money until you get to in the order of say 50,000 views a day, every day, 365 days a year. 100,000 views a day can make it decent full time job for most.

Thanks so much for the reply Dave.
What is CPM and how is it calculated?

Not really (per se) wanting to make a living from it, but it could definitely add to my retirement money as additional income (even a couple hundred bucks a month would be nice). Of course, the more the better. ( >:D capitalist.)

What is CPM and how is it calculated?

I thought I explained that in the video, it stands for Cost Per Mille, where a Mille is 1000 views. Or more correctly in this case it is your earnings per 1000 views.
So $2 CPM earns you $2 for 1000 ad/video views.
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/cpm.asp

The figure varies widely and depends on the time of year, the type of ads, the type of video you do, how targeted the demographic is, and how much advertisers are willing to pay.
Basically you can't know, you can just look at basic CPM trends over time to predict the future.

So, the CPM in the upper right corner of your analytics says $6.42, is that the CPM for your channel, that's a lot higher than $2.00?

Here is my channel's expected data: https://socialblade.com/youtube/channel/UCXodUSRG2__hTpW4ZgOgtcw

So I barely could get 850-1000 views per day which is still too low. But that is because I don't post many videos! Youtube wants you to post videos on specific dates like once a week or so, but I don't stick to any schedule because the channel is not my full time job... no even a job at this moment because it got demonetized due to the new law (I am 500 hours short to get to 4000).

I do plan to get to do weekly episodes but that is going to be hard as I have a day job and I don't have that creative content to begin with... So getting to weekly videos gonna require some effort.

I believe unless you do that, there is no hope of getting money from electronics channel.

I agree.

I think "I want to make money from YT/Twitch/[insert any media platform]" is similar to some millennials saying "I want to be famous!". By what means? What are you known for? (other than just being "famous") What unique and interesting content does the channel provide?

With that in mind, if you want to make money from a YT channel, I would first think about how you can efficiently make interesting content for a channel that is worth watching, attracts a large enough audience after e.g. 1 year of effort, and is sustainable for you to do combined with work, family, other hobbies and the hours you got to spend.

This is actually easier with electronics, for the following reasons:

1- electronics people don't need special effects on video = shoot + render is enough = very simple video works perfectly.
2- electronics is kinda niche so you won't get too much competition except for fellow electronics engineers, unlike for example prank channels.
3- viewers don't expect more from you, just the regular stuff. However, pranks have to get bigger, general youtubers must invent something new each now and then to keep viewers interested.
4- you can make what is already there and still get audience without copyright stuff, like millions of arduino tutorials.
5- you could get loyal fans easier than general channels.
6- it is a hobby so the channel won't cost you extra money, since that money is for the hobby itself. unlike if you wanna perform a prank and you buy tons of stuff then they became useless.

that is my opinion.
