Actually where I live in Chile is the driest desert in the world. Where I am going it only gets dry in the middle of winter.
Anything to do with the telescopes in the Atacama desert by any chance?
They employ lots of EEs in addition to scientists.
Lots of Canadian connections there.
Seeing as you asked, yes and no.
I came to Chile the first time in 2009 to do some video spots for Discovery Channel. I went to ALMA, the VLT and also did a spot on astronomy tourism in Chile. I fell in love with the skies and the clean air and decided to move here. During my time here I did some work with OASIS HD, MSNBC, History Channel, and some others. I also produced the video shown at the official inauguration of ALMA in March 2013.
Most of my time here has been in astronomy tours and public education with ALMA. I had a brief time as a technician at the Atacama Cosmological Telescope.
I have also run a solar energy installation company here. This is the best place for solar energy in the world. The problem is that the locals don't trust outsiders and also only look at price, nothing else. An example, a woman asked me for a quote on a system based on her requirements in her new house. Lights, TV, Satellite, etc... She had shown me a "kit" that local company was selling that was barely adequate to run some lights and run a computer. I told her she needed something 3 times as expensive. When I had finished her quote I called her many times but she ignored me. One day she finally answered and told me she had purchased the kit. I said "I told you that it wouldn't work for you" and she said "It doesn't matter, it is what I want to spend". That is the attitude here.
So with the ups and downs here I was wondering what was my next step. Then I received a job offer in Canada I cannot refuse. My Chilena wife is adventurous and so we go. I am excited for her new adventure.
But to keep this on topic in electronics; I am happy to be able to just browse around surplus electronics shops, to deliveries in a day instead of months, and be able to buy electronics at normal prices again. I might even go dumpster diving!
