I got sellected by Agilent for an product review.
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:14:29 am »
Well it looks to me, like the second major thing that happened to me (Fluke 87V adventure) ,
by staying as active forum member in the EEV, and get involved with all those debates,
about DMM brands and models.

That causes or leads us to further investigate about those devices.
And so we learn all those small secrets about their differences,
and also the plus and minus of its model.

Today I got an email, by an representative of Agilent ( Malaysia ),
he noticed my activity in the forum,
and Agilent decided to include me in an program of marketing research.

They will send me for free one evaluating unit (DMM)  , that after the test period of a month,
it will stay in my ownership.
And also I will participate in the final survey, with the results .
Plus I am free to contact them , at any time after the first month,
so to report likes dislikes or remarks .

I had all ready reply in to a basic survey,
and the next step will be the selection of the model of the device,
that they will send ( for review - evaluation) .
The selection its up to them.

Possible choices
U1272A or the U1242B
or a brand new meter that they will release soon.

Well by getting the Fluke 28II I become spoiled  ;D,
and there is no way to accept something not equal or even better than this.

I am also free to post my review publicly,
in any forum of my choice. ( EEV included )  ;)

I will add more info, as soon I will get the opponent of the Fluke 28II .

On a second thought, it looks that I was too friendly about the UNI-T,
that's why they never contact me for an review - evaluation program  :P

Nice work Kiriakos!
Well done to Agilent for taking an active interest in the forum and the value such reviews can bring them.
Even I don't have a shiny new Agilent meter for review!  :(

Congratulations Kiriakos! Maybe you will get a U1272A and we will be able to compare experiences with it. I will be in Makrinitsa for a week at the end of June - perfect time to discuss multimeters! :)

According to this video , the U1272A (one of the possible candidates) ,
has dual display , and in True RMS mode, the one represents the DC part and the second the AC part of the voltage,
well it looks impressive even as idea.
The understanding of  True RMS puzzles more heads than my.

The language of this video is not understandable by me, but you get an idea from the picture.

Now, if there is a way for the DMM, so to present also the combined result of both AC and DC = True RMS ,
i will find out when it will arrives  ..  :)

Congratulations, Kiriakos, couldn't have happened to a more deserving person!  I hope its a good pick-me-up considering the troubles in Greece.  Aren't you glad you are still logging on, at least for the time being?

Its interesting how aggressive a push Agilent is going to get folks to see their DMMs.

In this thread:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=3061.msg41045#msg41045

I suggested they lower their price drastically to get folks to 'preview' their DMMs, but pretty much its a strategy for any new test gear; it will quickly build a user base for spreading the word, good or bad.  The traditional channels, magazine reviews and professional journalists, I think just aren't as hands on as bloggers or active forums posters.  Agilent has gone further, they are actively looking for reviewers, basically anyone who seems to know gear based on what they post on the web, and then giving meters out, what appears to all be free.

At element14.com, 3 were given out since Nov, 2010.   An eevblog member, tronixstuff, has an extensive review.  Its one of the top returns if you google u1272a review:

http://tronixstuff.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/review-agilent-u1272a-true-rms-digital-multimeter/

It just shows how valuable the reviews on the web are.

Thanks for the positive comments S.

In sort ..

1) Yes I am happy so far about my on-line status,
but i am ready with the firefox in a USB stick, so to handle things even from public internet locations, aka internet cafe.

2) I have no emotions about brands , and that gives me the opportunity to express freely my opinion,
no matter what, something that I like also in Dave , he acts the same too .

3) In the last email that I got , they justified their selection , by saying again that is an model comparable with the 87V.
And not with the 28II due the IP ratting.

4) They can write what ever they like on their own documents,
but if we the users not agree with them , then they live in a fantasy.

5) I got very surprised by their offer , yes I am partially knowledgeable to test the meter ,
and I have also and basic reference test gear, and I will do my part of the agreement to test and say my opinion.
My first reply to them included the phrase ... I accept to test the meter if you agree to pay the return to base shipping cost.
I had no idea that I am going to keep it.

6) About other reviews :
Well I think that I am an smart person , and I had understand by the tone of voice of Agilent ,
that they offer their tools  in to specific target groups of people , with different job style .
Example : electronics engineers - industrial electricians - specialist in other fields or even students.

They collect all those results , so to learn what the people like.

They do not care to become famous , because of an Greek with an average skill in English language, will review an product of them.
They need the opinion of an industrial electrician , and they will have it.

My strong point is that I also have the fresh made Fluke 28II , and the what ever comparison it would be very interesting.    :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I've met some of the people from Agilent Malaysia and they are serious about making test equipment, and very serious about getting feedback from us users. I'm not an industrial electrician but they listened carefully to my comments and thoughts and have been great about keeping in touch since our meeting for follow up thoughts. While I don't think of myself as brand loyal (I would be very happy to get a Gossen Metrawatt DMM... ;) ) I must say that their responsiveness to me as a customer has won Agilent a huge number of points in my book and when I'll be ready to consider further purchases of high-end test gear Agilent will be the first company I turn to.

1) i sense Fluke vs Agilent again.
2) agree with saturation. you are the most eligible person for this offer Kiri (electrician deal with HV)
3) now you can put your decade box into good serious use ;)
4) no more "Good Bye" Kiri. now you have a responsibility, as a blogger and reviewer.
5) last not least, i think they poisoning you! point (1)? :P just a nasty speculation. and again... :P to Kiri.

1) i sense Fluke vs Agilent again.

Yes and no  :)
Yes they fight to win the industrial market, check the Proof  http://wireless.agilent.com/videos/u1270/index.html
( from the camp of Fluke we have seen similar educational videos,
and also those that they maintain the fear factor by speaking about safety - by showing explosions)

Both targeting, so to win the industrial market, and this is understandable.

To me, the usability factor in the field, will be the No1 point as comparison of the too.
example ... test in bright sun : can I see the screen and digits ?
Comparison of Min/Max and Data logging : Are both meters capable to record accurately,
the start current of an three phase motor ?
( even here In my own repairs lab, I have three phase electrical installation and motor so to test)  ;)

2) agree with saturation. you are the most eligible person for this offer Kiri (electrician deal with HV)

Spot on  .. on that  :)

3) now you can put your decade box into good serious use ;)
Well with out it I would feel poor  :D
And the reference DC source , and the reference mA source they will found good use ,
for another one time .

4) no more "Good Bye" Kiri. now you have a responsibility, as a blogger and reviewer.
This is an sensitive matter and it could resolved in time (currently unknown) ,
I do not feel as blogger and reviewer,
but I am almost 42 , 10 of may its my birthday,
and I have gather in all this years technical experiences that I like to share with the people ,
and even with Agilent .
My father was also electrician and I hold his own experiences too .
If i do the sum of his experiences plus my own, I do hold in me an valuable pack.

5) last not least, i think they poisoning you! point (1)? :P just a nasty speculation. and again... :P to Kiri.

Nop it does not work that way ...  ;D

Agilent haves to send me and three bench type ones , so to be equal in quantity with the Fluke ones that I own.

Now honestly speaking , PetrosA had some nags about the usability ( ranges control ) at the U1272A,
Dave reviewed the one with OLED display ( battery life and some other details was irritating to the point that the viewer would feel insecure to buy an Agilent that easy - price tag VS what you get ) .
I would seek and spot the differences of the Industrial Fluke VS Agilent, with my own criteria.
For instance , I do not care to take it apart just for pictures ..

And so the what ever opinion that I would get,
it would be useful mostly at the Industrial target group. ( electricians and out door technicians )

Agilent wrote to me :
Quote
I will not try to impress you. Instead I am hoping that this product will be the one that impresses you

We will find out ... soon  ;)

( all ready I have download, all the latest software and all the technical library about the U1272A ,  I am ready )

Knock wood on that ... ( no no no )
The Data Logging adapter it will cost you the price of the meter..  :D  :D  :D

Agilent pricing in UK ..  ( check the accessories at the bottom of the page )  http://isswww.co.uk/Multimeters/Agilent/Agilent-U1272A-Handheld-Digital-Multimeter/

It looks that the additional accessories that I requested , they do not have supreme pricing in EU.
Or looks a bit cheaper than the Fluke ones.

There's no reason for this to turn into a Fluke vs. Agilent competition. Both companies are large, established manufacturers of high quality test equipment. Their track records cover different categories but are both outstanding and it would be good to see products from each company judged on their own merits.

The bottom line is that the electrical and electronics user markets are very different. From hobbiest to engineer, the electronics user is generally much more capable in their use of a multimeter than the average electrician (or - scary thought - the DIY homeowner). So aside from first time buyers, electronics users are generally very good at assessing a multimeter for their needs. Sadly, many electricians have a very limited understanding of what can be done with a multimeter and an even smaller idea of how to judge a good one vs. a bad one. At the end of the day, it's less important whether you own the "best" multimeter, but whether you own the best multimeter for your needs.

Well generally speaking you are correct , but ....  there is an extra filtering factor when you get in the industrial field.
This filter , it does separates the ones who have limited understanding from the ones who haves an wider one.
By my understanding, the industrial environment , is the only " space " that electrical and electronics must coexist.
And this " space " is available only for people who had some how be or get baptized,  in both skills.

I do understand your enthusiasm ,
Even me , I am arresting my self to occasionally be in smiling mode,  just with the idea of what happened so far.
Even the contact person of Agilent smiled to me by the use of a smiley.

Well I prefer to keep a low profile for the moment.
And saving the smiles for now.
If the Agilent U1272A manages to impresses me  ( Agilent words)
I will scream about it ..  ;D
Its a promise.

JEALOUS! Nicely done, though. Can't wait to see your full commentary.

I have plenty of ideas about the basic chapters of my commentary,
but I will keep them hidden until the end of the main test period ( one month ),
I have all ready the feeling that I am going to write exams about the U1272A  :D

Nop, you have to mess well with the Fluke ones, so to gain interest .
You must to learn first, how to kill them and revive them .  ;D  ;D  ;D

btw: if only Agilent send me their "Free" clamp meter, i will be grateful :D. Currently i'm thinking of getting one to check my home AC consumption, specifically Uni-T, so i'll got another sexy redhead :D

About clamp probe I had sale my soul to Chauvin-Arnoux  True RMS AC/DC ,
and I will always thanks PetrosA for the suggestion, so to look at that brand.
( Even if it took more than two weeks studying specs so to make my mind)  :P
(The technical documents " Made In France " looks as disaster , hard to understand )

I would also suggest to get an clamp probe , instead of an clamp meter.
But the final choice are always yours.

Well for any one who cares to know.

I just got a email ..

It looks that there was a slight mix up about sending the unit to me ,
and finally the DMM will be send to me from Germany ..

Interesting turnout , the least that I can say.

The firmware hiccups of the U1272A , that solved before 18 hours,
caused an major delay in my story ( 40 days),
even so finally everything return to normal at the side of Agilent,
and my own unit it did shipped with DHL express from the factory.

Currently I do have active tracking , and watching the packet coarse.  :)

Thursday, June 09
PENANG - MALAYSIA
BANGKOK - THAILAND

Friday, June 10
BANGKOK - THAILAND
LEIPZIG - GERMANY

The unit comes with the old firmware,
and lots of accessories.

And from a different route in few weeks,
I will get one Agilent  T-shirt  (Go Orange Agilent Hand held)   :)
(currently available exclusively for Agilent Asia)
(As special gift from a special friend)

I am finally smiling again about that matter, its true.

so to send it to me, but I was afraid that you will gonna keep it ..  LOL    :D

I act like a kid from my excitement, but I am justified.  :)

The bird landed to Athens yesterday, I count less than 10 hours about getting the box.

Who will ever believe that I would had such a delay for customs clearance,
plus one day on hold due the general strike in Greece.

I need just 12 hours of more patience, but now the package it is truly unstoppable,
with proofs.

Few words, many pictures  ;)

Extra accessories: the case plus the modem, plus the Fine Tip Test Probes U1164A.
I will not nag about them, even if I has hopping for more.  :P

Even so my suggestion to Agilent is to start using CD's.
I got no printed quick start guide, or one CD with the data-logger software and manuals in PDF.
Yes I have internet, but not every one has.

The device looks good, the orange around it its not plastic material, its an hard rubber,
like the rubber found in car wheels.

I had Power it up, tested the display back-light,
all looks ok.
The range switch looks a bit small for the size of my hands,
but it has an smooth operation.

I will have lots of fun with it, but I will need some time,
so to learn how to drive it ..  getting in the menus and stuff.  ;)

The first U1272A that came to Greece !!   :D
I will need few beers ..  soon.

you are wise to post pictures, otherwise i'll kick you in the foot! congratulation bro! ;)
ps: dont drink too much beers, beside the risk of wasting your money at the same cost as agilent, i'm afraid the next day the fw got crashed too! or the housing! for unknown reason :o :P :D

I love you bro and you know that...  8)

I will watch out about the beers,
it came with the latest firmware loaded all ready.

And so I started to play with the data logger,
I did find my way with it, but took me lots of hours.

Its time for the damn beers.   ;)

After of many days of testing and observations, I am finally to the point, to put everything on paper.  :)

Even so, the mailman had bring today one package from Agilent that came from Germany (Boblingen)
It was the T shirt (  T shirt's)

The photo model had a day off today, and so I did all the job alone.  ;)

(This T shirt is new line, made for the authorized distributors)
Enjoy the view ...  :P  ;D

Uncle Vernon notes the matching Athenian safety sandals! While those are an admirable attempt at emulating traditional Australian work wear made famouse by our forum host, they are not made of rubber and thus could never achieve a comparable CAT rating.   ;)

Hi Roger,
Currently I am evaluating the U1272A , and I do that because among other reasons, I am an industrial electrician too.  ;D
If they found useful my product evaluation methods, there is a chance to get more stuff coming.
But I am unable to predict the future right now.

I did some Google search about the model that you looking to get,
I think that you misspelled the part number probably ?
and you are looking for the U1242A .

The U1272A review it is available here  https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=4190.0

I have all ready get their email reply about it, their words are that they have one large team trying to digest it.  ;D

This cycle about Agilent and  the U1272A had completed.
I learned a lot by participating in something important like this.
It was my first cooperation or handshake with a serious player of the industry,
lets not forget that those people are making our tools, with constant R&D.
And I am really happy, that they found my review as   very detailed, honest and comprehensive.

I like to thank our Dave Jones,  and all my friends and  members of this community,
for their offering of positive energy.  :)

The last words in their email are : We look forward to continue working with you.

And this translates to: That even in the time of crisis , the electricians are still useful ... LOL    ;D ;D ;D
