Title: Naomi SexyCyborg Wu's Patreon Shut Down by VICE
Post by: NiHaoMike on April 03, 2018, 02:10:04 pm
(If you are confused about the title, pay a little more attention to the ending of most AvE videos.)

Meanwhile, hydrogen chooches in a fusion reactor 93 million miles away to get the pixies dancing in some intricate silicon mazes at the NiHaoMike Blockchain Research Center, trying to wrangle some zeros and ones into relief packages.

While I'm not a religious watcher of AvE, I'm confused as to what his endings have to do with this, as most of them are about keeping animal tendrils in compression apparatuses. I might be the stupid one here, but could someone explain this to me?

Don't take the phrase literally.

I think I'm starting to get what he may be on about, but my issue is probably lack of context on Naomi. I'm not entirely sure what is going on with that.

I'm assuming something like "VICE has her in squeeze lock," (since it would be somewhat difficult to put her dick in a vice.)

I mean I guess I get that, but what confused me is that as far as I am aware, she doesn't have a dick.

I've changed this thread title as it has nothing to do with AvE and it's important.

NEVER, EVER believe what a person from the media says to you.  Their job is to sell information, not to protect you.

Words to live by that so many people so sadly ignore.

When money is involved, there is little that is ever off the table.

EDIT: So as I understand it, VICE, which is one of the worst publications on the internet, even before this, I guess posted information on an article they did that they were asked not to, and after an email feud with them, they decided to attack Naomi by destroying her livelyhood? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if they did this, I think some kneecaps are about to get bashed in.

Same here. What is going on and how can a third party shut down something like Patreon?

It seems fair they suspend her account. If she had a personal dispute she should not use her channel to disclose sensitive data for the other party.

It also could be illegal in many countries.

Two wrongs don't make a right and it seems her response cost her her livelihood, while Vice lost little to nothing. If and when true, the usual disclaimers.

Unfortunately, the video didn't give a lot of information about the how and why. That may of course be intentional.

Couldn't you get that in a written contract/NDA before agreeing to the interview?
Sure, if your dealing with a respectful journalist it might not be necessary, but VICE is known to expose what they can.

Wow, that's... stereotypical of certain tribalists.

I really hope Naomi didn't sign anything from Vice TV. Her one weakness in my view, is that she doesn't yet understand how very dark the world is. She thinks it's just misguided idiots and jerks vs the honest creative people. Possibly she might have been suckered into signing something like that contract Rossman reviewed.

Perhaps this will blow back on Vice TV, gale force.

I wonder if there's any connection between Alphabet and Vice TV?

I don't know, but VICE is one of the worst things I would call a publication on the internet. They aren't BuzzFeed bad, but they are incredibly SJW, and when not, just overly clickbaity. I have seen very few of what I would describe good, honest, or balanced articles coming out of them, so I am not eager to trust them over a creator that seems pretty cool to me. I haven't taken a side in my mind, as I can't be arsed, I have enough things I take sides on, but VICE doing stupid shit to people doesn't surprise me, and I would hedge my bet that they started and ended it any day.

I agree. I flatly refuse to let any company see my reviews before publication for example, and I specifically have that in my rules on my website.

You agree to an interview and "take's ya chances"

Why the heck would you need a contract for an interview?

They came into her home, which she apparently is very concerned with keeping private. So have an NDA signed which should prevent them having any "secret" information used in the article.
Most people wouldn't care, but whatever she wants to keep private is either important to her business (think about donation stream) or to herself.

This part, redacted:

Quote
Wu told me she didn’t want to discuss her marital status, but before publishing the piece, I followed up with her. I hoped to discuss the Reddit conspiracy theory that claimed someone she’s in a relationship with was behind her work. Wu has spent significant energy proving these conspiracy theories false, and shutting down this harassment has inspired other women who have faced similar treatment online.

“Do you actually have time to hop on Skype to go over the Reddit conspiracy theory?” I wrote. “It would be really helpful [to] address these allegations. I saw that video where you say you're [name redacted’s] wife—and I'd like to discuss the unfairness of assuming a woman receives help, just because her partner works/worked in a similar industry. If you don't want to discuss this at all, I understand and won't push. I think the Reddit conspiracy theory is vicious, but since this profile is long and comprehensive, I'd love to highlight your opinions about prototype bias, gender expectations, and racism as they relate to the rumor. Let me know how that sounds, and what you're comfortable with.”

Then don't invite them into your home maybe? Maybe go a hacker space or something and let them interview you.
She has 250k subscribers, she hardly needs the exposure.

Excellent point, that might have made more sense.

I think she's learnt some valuable lessons here.
a) Don't dox people, there will be repercussions.
and
b) Learn to control the narrative without resorting to legal means.

By that I mean she was in the box seat. Vice presumably came to her to do an interview, she could have said no to a home interview, suggested other better places to do the interview etc.

Don't want people in your home? Don't invite them.
Don't want a reporter to ask you about your relationships or sexual orientation, it's easier and less confrontational to simply decline to comment when asked rather than trying to lay down rules. It's not like this was a live TV interview where they can put you on the spot and hence some ground rules might be warranted.

Oh, and c) if you are going to complain, make sure you have the high ground to do so, otherwise it could backfire.

I'm in a position to actually do those things and try and replicate that if I so desire, but I choose not to.

This is the only controversial part of the article as far as I can see:

Quote
And despite her scruples about Shenzhen’s makers—who is and who isn’t one—Wu is a champion for positive change in the technology industry, advocating for issues like diversity and accessibility to her thousands of followers.

But Wu’s form of activism can also be hostile and combative. She wields her impressive Twitter presence to confront people she disagrees with. I know this from personal experience, as Wu took issue with my reporting after I returned from China.

At the same time Wu responded to me, she started tweeting about VICE. Over the next several weeks, Wu publicly shopped our correspondence to journalists and tagged me, my former colleague, my editor, and VICE in dozens of tweets; her followers sent me many more.

In emails, Wu accused me of blackmailing her and writing a “hit piece.” Without having seen the story, she wrote that if I published the article under my byline, VICE “will throw you to the wolves.”

“If you don’t believe me, I’ll direct my tweets to your name- see if they come help under the VICE brand or make an excuse why they should stay out of it so they can blame you later for acting alone and cut you loose- with a reputation written where it can never be erased as the female journalist who signal-boosts harassment campaigns against women in tech,” she wrote.

Wu asked to see a draft of the story prior to publication, which we declined to do as it is against our editorial policy. She took issue with other standard editorial protocols, such as when a fact-checker reached out to other sources for this piece.

“We just need whatever article you vomit out to determine in just how many ways you violated basic journalistic ethics,” Wu wrote in an email to my editor.

Assuming that's all true, Naomi did not do herself any favors here unfortunately, it was the wrong approach.

I followed her last brouhaha and was mildly interested in this one. In the light of the article snippet, I agree with Dave's points: don't overreact, control the narrative and keep your privacy at all costs if you don't want any of it to be at risk of being exposed. My opinion is the same as the one I had before: she will eventually grow up, become more serene and hopefully learn something from this - it doesn't seem she learned much from her past episode.

BTW, Louis Rossmann's video is awesome!

I didn't see anything in the article which was worthy of this sort of hellfire response from Wu.

In fact I spent a while the other day looking for some other article I assumed must have existed that she was angry about rather than this one.

Fair enough she doesn't want to have too much information out there that might identify her, the world is full of weirdos, but I didn't see anything in the article that would do that.

Followed Naomi Wu for a while, it looks more show (exploiting her female attributes and overexposure of the body), than technology, but stopped following her activity, after several racist rants and dragging artificially "white men", "yellow women", etc. It reminds about my visits to China and translation from trusted people, who know chinese language, what "local common folk" talk about "this laowai". Thats give me reason to avoid stereotypes "being white is privilege", because somewhere it is more drawback, than privilege. Any mention of race IMHO racism, and my opinion - she is racist.
What happened might be predictable, but totally unfair, and significance of this particular example - it shows how vulnerable are bloggers and why often they can't cover "sensitive subjects", because all their income sources can be shut very easily even by such company as Vice. Each debunking Dave doing (and he is doing totally good thing for humanity, so we don't go wrong way) creating risk for him as well :(
Title: Re: Naomi SexyCyborg Wu's Patreon Shut Down by VICE

She's a white privilege screecher? Alright, I've definitely lost all care for what's gone on here. I really didn't keep up with her much, but I was aware she did show off her body a bit (which I don't care about, it's her body, she can do what she wants with it). I didn't know she was a racist.

Shoving agendas into something that's supposed to be fun and about tech usually is a sure-fire way to piss me off. I like debating opinions with rational, open-minded equals, but I also prefer to keep that shit to twitter, and the occasional bout on this forum.

My personal view right now is to trust neither party. I hate VICE, for reasons outside of what happened here, so I am not eager to trust them in any respect.

I know of many a great YouTuber who got their kneecaps bashed in for talking about an opinion to people who can't handle them. I believe that anybody who can't accept other people's opinions, and look past them can't call themselves an adult. VICE has posted some shit articles, but I would still work with, and possibly be friends with someone who believed their drivel. I form opinions on other people's opinions while accepting them at the same time.

Unfortunately so many people, even in my own back garden tend to not be like that. I am often faced with people and groups who love to spread their holier than thou one true opinion, but demonize, and even ostracize those who disagree. I'd go deeper into this, but due to the current political climate, I'm afraid of attracting the same people I talk about despising.

Anyways, I ramble on about this stupid stuff on occasion. 90 WPM means I tend to flood anything where I have to share an opinion until it becomes completely tl;dr.

what am I talking about again?

Artists using themselves as part of a work of art is nothing new. What is unusual is the combination of beautiful "model" and electronics. Qualcomm's Saura Naderi and her robot dress is another example. (By coincidence, both Saura's robot dress and part of the mining cluster that's helping Naomi run on Snapdragon 410s!)

I hope Naomi adopts Bitcoin as one option for funding and Bittorrent as one option for content distribution, both of which are very robust. My desktop PC is more than eager to help, but its dated Sandy Bridge E can't even manage unity mining earnhoney, the only CPU coin that readily converts to what she currently accepts. Curecoin/Foldingcoin only readily convert to Bitcoin. Finding cures for cancer and funding the production of a friend's TV show at the same time is a big win.

Not quite - this is Matt (C-Milk)'s channel, who is from either US or Canada - SerpentZA is who you are thinking of ( who is actually English but grew up in SA. Both their channels have some very interesting vids on many aspects of China

If you think being white is a privilege in an Asian dominant country, you are wrong in the first place.
Thats exactly my point. But Naomi, seems think different way.

Quote
As for the "laowai" thing, it's not always an insult, and it's almost always not an insult. This is just like "gaijin" in Japanese -- traditionally used as a xenophobic word, but in modern society, just a neutral word.
Foreigners living China for a long time or moved permanently to China usually refer to themselves as "laowai", and it's not offensive at all. It's just a racial joke.
As a Chinese living in America, I also do this kind of racial jokes on myself, such as when I come to a meeting late, I always say I came on colored people's time, or when I f*ed things up, I always say I chinked. I don't consider this insulting at all.
The most popular Chinese channel on YouTube is called "laowhy86", by a South African.
I know laowai is not insult by itself, but context where and how it was used in talks of people around me (in China), who thought i wont know translation - was not pleasant, extremely racist.

Perhaps a "pool service" might be the solution. For example, if viewer A sends $50 in Bitcoin to Naomi and viewer B sends $100 in Paypal to Dave, what actually happens is that Naomi gets $50 in Paypal and Dave gets $50 in Paypal and $50 in Bitcoin. Actually, it could be done P2P by makers who want to support other makers, with some transparency system in place to prevent cheating.

I know laowai is not insult by itself, but context where and how it was used in talks of people around me (in China), who thought i wont know translation - was not pleasant, extremely racist.

Sorry hear about that, and yes, xenophobic people in China do exist, in massive quantity.
And yes, there were several news about foreigners getting roughed up in metro for no reason in China.
Generally the lower social status one has, the more xenophobic one is.
Also, the older the age is, the more xenophobic one is.

College educated young Chinese people usually don't do that shit.
As for the old guys (50+), well, some in China even have Chairman Mao's photo hung on their walls. What level of global thinking can you expect?
Unfortunately it exist in my country as well(Russia) and probably in many other "monocultural" areas. Exactly as you said, just different photo on wall.

Relatively recent laws in Russia, i believe will uproot racism much faster than everywhere, and i'm already seeing very positive changes.
But how it is relevant to subject, that this law works without bringing privileges to some particular race/minorities, it is generic - just forbid to discriminate any person by gender, race, religion, etc. Doesnt matter, in minority you are or majority, and if someone like Naomi tweet about white men privilege on makers event, without having real proof it is _premeditated racial discrimination_ - will backfire to person who tweeted, that is in fact he/she is racist, by law. And i believe it should be like this.

I have only heard of Naomi from a previous EEVBlog thread and watched a video or two... but I even mentioned previously that I felt awkward and uncomfortable (as a heterosexual married male) to look at it for any "electronic" learning content. It was NSFW for sure. While I'm not one to judge and think she can do anything she wants, if we are to be realistic here (not idealistic), you must admit that her fashion choices probably did contribute to her popularity more so than the electronic education aspects of her videos.

Who is to say that someone at VICE had a "bone to pick" with her and either (a) didn't believe she knew much about electronics, and (b) she was just a puppet or "camera candy" with someone else behind the scenes helping her, and (c) knowing that sex sells articles... baited her into this mess and she unfortunately showed she was naive and took it. She should NOT have given any personal details or home tours (forget NDA and all that stuff) to a stranger, period... and shrugged it off. And it would probably be better not to have tried to fight with VICE online. I'm sure she has other rumours and criticisms online as I'm sure she has been getting already. Why react now? And does she really need a Patreon account? How many other places are there where she can ask for money (like PayPal Donate and so on)?

Naomi will find a way to get over this, I doubt she has such a thin skin, and the VICE article if anything may have given her a larger audience. I doubt her existing fan-base cares and she can use other platforms to get money so in the end I wonder if it actually did impact her much except she learned not to deal with interviews the same anymore (many of which have their own agendas and bias before even starting).

Couldn't you get that in a written contract/NDA before agreeing to the interview?
Sure, if your dealing with a respectful journalist it might not be necessary, but VICE is known to expose what they can.

Why the heck would you need a contract for an interview?

Because, "any thing you say may be taken down twisted around and used against you"

True... These journalists are going to have an "angle" and VICE wants an informative but also entertaining piece on science and technology innovation in China. They obviously picked Naomi because she is different due in part to her "features" and large fan-base with millions of YouTube hits. Naomi knows it, she has made a living from it and her reaction to this seems a bit hypocritical.

I'm assuming this is the article in question?:

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/3kjqdb/naomi-wu-sexy-cyborg-profile-shenzhen-maker-scene (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/3kjqdb/naomi-wu-sexy-cyborg-profile-shenzhen-maker-scene)

She is quoted as saying in the article:

Quote
Wu’s appearance is attention-grabbing. And it’s something she has parlayed into advocacy for better representation of women in technology. “A lot of people do clickbait,” Wu tells me. “I do too. I don’t put it in the title. I put it in the pictures.”

I read the article and I don't see what the fuss is about. I think Naomi should defend herself about this Reddit conspiracy theory about her not being a real maker, or having her husband do everything for her, or that she is all fake, etc... Which people will always accuse someone of when they see someone successful who doesn't fit the image they believe. But rather than take the high-brow approach she got embroiled with VICE in a downward spiral. At the bottom of the article linked above it seems to be just that.

I don't know what got under her skin so badly but it seems she didn't think that it would have any repercussions, otherwise I am confident she wouldn't have "doxxed" as you call it and got kicked off Patreon. Like I said, this is 1 day news and then tomorrow she's back to doing whatever it is she does and getting PayPal Donate or some other medium to fund her activities. And upon reading the VICE article it doesn't sound as bad as initially led to believe by her reaction either.

TBH, people will try to frame you either if you concede an interview or not but, if you do, be prepared to deal with anything that is put out with strong arguments in your favour.

I heard that some popular Youtube commentators here in the US do not participate in interviews without signed contracts anymore - one of them disallows any form of editing to prevent things to be taken out of context.

With this drawbacks, I guess bikini mode is coming ?

With this trend and market for "this kind of" video segment, I'm guessing its just the matter time, that sort of nude soldering/desoldering paid video blogs are about to surface.

Of course it is not realistic to expect expert level electronics knowledge from an artist who merely dabbles in electronics. In fact, artists often do get criticism from engineers - and then the engineers expect the artists to be nice!

Some of the outfits are a bit showing off, but I doubt she wants to be another Joanne Chiang. Showing off is not unusual in art - check out some music videos by rook&nomie (a band Micah Elizabeth Scott did some technical work for). Also interesting to note is at least twice, what would normally be a NSFW outfit was allowed for a company tour because the company apparently realized they would get great advertising out of it.

Paypal is the last link between her and (part of) my mining cluster. Basically, I get to experience the fun of mining, show my other friends that I use technology for good, and contribute something to the community other than increased mining difficulty. Oh, and I finally ended the "green competition" between my friend Allie Moore and I because I used solar to power my mining setup.

Popular youtube commentators get more views that mainstream media channels, they don't need the interviews.
Reminds me of the whole PewDiePie nazi thing that started the whole adpocolypse. The Wall Street Journal who instigated the whole thing offered to let him write an article for them explaining his side of the story. He just laughed at them, he doesn't need their platform to defend himself, his platform is 10 times bigger. Which of course is why they hate him, they are dying and he's growing bigger than they ever were.

because I used solar to power my mining setup.

I use free energy to mine, unfortunately it only works during the winter.
I did mine earnhoney with my Sandy Bridge E on unusually cold days even though it was not particularly profitable because the "waste" heat wasn't wasteful at those times. Now it won't even make unity (and the cold weather is pretty much all gone from my area until much later in the year), but if heat is desired, it will still easily outdo a heat pump after accounting for mining revenue. There's something nice about heating your room with something that makes your best friend happy, and if I give away all of the mined coins (as I just did, after conversion of course), it still costs exactly the same as using a resistive heater.

That brings into light an interesting conversation about traditional media as a whole.

Regardless of what major traditional media outlet you visit, I will bet you every step of the way they are getting paid to tell you stuff that their benefactors want you to hear. Getting a story's details wrong isn't illegal (and never should be), but bending the truth is a great tool to get people to believe something you want them to.

Dave is completely correct as to PewDiePie's size being why they hate them, but I do not believe that says everything. I believe they hate him because they can't control him. They hate him because they do not have the power to publish bullshit that everybody will believe. The death of one abused power, however, will likely lead to another one. Regardless of how, people with money want to get a lot of people on their side to make even more money.

I think it's alright to trust most media sites to give you SOME facts, but to never trust them to give you an opinion. No man alive is innocent of that. Even still, god knows how many times mainstream televised media was caught pushing bullshit about things like video games, online personalities, and I believe the reason why everybody is so piss scared of the alt-right. After all, if the media is afraid of it, then why shouldn't you?

It's probably much simpler than that. Whatever information gets interpreted, is coloured by who interprets. I don't think news outlets always sing the song of whoever pays them for the sake of it. The selection is probably already made in the hiring process and subsequently through company dynamics and culture. Don't underestimate what group dynamics will do to people, especially if they're already so inclined. Add to that the willingness of people to lie to themselves when that is in their own interest and you have much of what we see.

I am inclined to agree with you. We are in a soup of human philosophy that few if anybody can swim through.

As a person with an opinion, who occasionally enjoys debating other people with it, I tend to not only engage in outrage, but enjoy it. It forms my strongest opinions, but also binds me to some of my strongest friends.

I tend to have a lot of time on my hands for various reasons, and much of that I use to just think about the world as it works, and form opinions on it. I tend to use other people as a validity check on my own thoughts to attempt to improve my view on the world.

Either way, at the end of the day, VICE is still a sack of shit, both parties seem guilty of something here, and life moves on.

I've heard of PewDiePie, but that is the limit of my interest. Beyond knowing the name, PewDiePie is irrelevant to me.

And that is maybe the point with Naomi Wu. She might have somehow been personally upset, but the reality is that nobody else particularly cares one way or another about who she is or what she gets up to. People need to get over themselves. Nobody is really that important.

Storm in a teacup comes to mind. Just ignore things, let it pass, and get on with your life. It probably takes a certain amount of life experience to reach that understanding, and that is the burden the young have to bear. They act unwisely and can't shrug off the consequences. As a result they bring suffering upon themselves.

Yes, no point pretending her success and popularity is not almost entirely due to her looks, and she knows it. And she goes out of her way to showcase that and readily admits it.
Nothing wrong with that of course, go for it, more power to her, it's worked well for her and allowed her to capitalise on that exposure and move in other direction if she so desires. And the media love it of course, it's clickbait from tech heaven.

Yep, precisely.

It's not dissimilar to doing equipment reviews in our engineering space. Manufacturers don't like that they cannot control video bloggers opinions. They don't like that they can't review content before it gets published etc.
But they have had to resign themselves to the fact that they can't control individuals like they could (partly) influence the magazines of days gone by that they advertised in, it's a different game now and they have had to adapt if they want the benefits of the platform and exposure.

Youtube is just too big and the individual has the power now.
Heck, I'm a nobody in the Youtube world and even some of my niche videos get more views than some mainstream general interest TV shows that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or more to produce.
PewDiePie and others can switch on a webcam and reach 10's of millions of people instantly, figures the mainstream media can't even imagine.
It's a new world.

So let's get a few things straight.....

She makes a brand image almost entirely based on sexuality, but that's off limits to talk about.

She is quite to happy to play the special pixie faerie woman in tech struggling against all the big bad males, while simultaneously her financial success is the result of raking in money from legions of thirsty male patreon users.

She is also quite happy to play up the victim angle, then engages in dirty tactics like doxxing and using her fanbase to harass others.

OK

But what if the friend did something wrong or questionable to put them in that position?
In that case if it was my friend, I'd advise them on the best way to exit the predicament and prevent it from happening again, rather than focus on stopping the attacks by counter-attcking.
Sometimes a tactical withdrawal is the best solution.

As much as I like and support Naomi, I'm afraid she isn't an innocent victim here. So I for one am trying to help her by explaining better ways she could have handled this and hence help prevent this sort of stuff happening in the future. I hope she learns from it.

So, interviewing a webcam model and asking them to talk about the specifics of their trade? Sounds completely normal.

The only problem in this instance is that something is someone is mixing two genres, ie softcore/modelling with technology, relying on the former as the primary means of success AND the primary means of defining their identity and persona, then they insist that only the latter is permissible as a topic of discussion. Not just in articles either.

Congratulations on getting a shout-out from her. Must feel good. But it's important to be honest with oneself whether that would feel as good if she wasn't so pretty and popular, or whether she'd be validating you if didn't provide utility to her. If you check out her comments sections on videos, there are hundred of guys hoping for a response from her. Not intending anything as a personal attack either, its just very obvious what is happening when you take a step back from the situation.

Yes. Presumably the Vice person who was doxed complained to Patreon, and Patreon have a zero tolerance policy on this so they shut down her account.
If that was me and I did the doxing by accident I'd be apologising profusely to all and sundry trying to get my Patreon reinstated. But AFAIK Naomi has made no comment at all on the doxing.

Yep, I just checked that and she has comment approval turned on.
So she won't publish any critical comment or ones that asks questions she doesn't like. That tells me a lot.
I asked her on twitter to comment on the doxing, and I don't expect a reply, yet she was happy to respond to me before in general.
From her zero comments on the doxing I can only conclude that she did the doxing very deliberately and Vice has now done a follow up article stating as much, in fact, even worse, claiming she made further threats.

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/pax3q7/a-note-about-shenzhens-homegrown-cyborg-naomi-wu

We still feel the story speaks for itself, and have no desire to publicly engage with every subject who disagrees with our stories. Every person is entitled to share their opinion. But in this case, after Naomi published a video containing the home address of one of our employees to multiple platforms and threatened our staff and their partners with further doxing and harassment, we felt it was warranted to discuss what has happened. In regard to the video specifically, the platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, and Patreon, determined for themselves what action to take in accordance with their terms of service.

And this is I think were her narrative fails. Vice don't have the clout to take down Youtube videos (the video description "Vice Magazine will probably get this video taken down" is laughable), or get Patreon to suspend someone. But they, like we all do, have a right to report deliberate doxing and potentially get that material removed. Patreon have a more harsh policy on this though and shut down your entire account rather than remove content.

So let's get a few things straight.....

She makes a brand image almost entirely based on sexuality, but that's off limits to talk about.
A college friend of mine (who shall remain anonymous) also "showed herself off" (to an even greater extent than Naomi ever did) to get Bitcoin back in the day. Would it be OK to ask her just how she showed herself on camera?

So, interviewing a webcam model and asking them to talk about the specifics of their trade? Sounds completely normal.

The only problem in this instance is that something is someone is mixing two genres, ie softcore/modelling with technology, relying on the former as the primary means of success AND the primary means of defining their identity and persona, then they insist that only the latter is permissible as a topic of discussion. Not just in articles either.
That anonymous former Bitcoiner works in a completely different field (medical) nowadays. She also sometimes mixed in some tech as in some basic "how to" guides relating to Bitcoin like how to set up a miner. Some of the things she did to get Bitcoin (like bust the "girls can't pee standing up" myth) were controversial with the Bitcoiners of the day and are definitely not something she would want connected to her real name. While I have no clue exactly how much she made doing all that, paying for expensive medical school or at least taking a big chunk out of the loan is very significant.
Quote
Congratulations on getting a shout-out from her. Must feel good. But it's important to be honest with oneself whether that would feel as good if she wasn't so pretty and popular, or whether she'd be validating you if didn't provide utility to her. If you check out her comments sections on videos, there are hundred of guys hoping for a response from her. Not intending anything as a personal attack either, its just very obvious what is happening when you take a step back from the situation.
Above and beyond what she normally does, as in dedicate a post about me including pictures that I told her she can use.
https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/932136250454163458
You could say I "bought" a badge of honor to display on my Facebook, which I used to get positive responses from my other friends. It really does make mining feel like a game and every part of the setup now has a special story attached. Several of my friends who work at or used to work at Qualcomm were very happy to see how I was putting Snapdragon processors to good use. (Side note: dragons have special meaning in Chinese culture.)

Good for you Mike, I guess you have a special spot in her heart.  :-+

BTW, hows Tiffany Yep doing ?
Naomi's popularity was exactly what makes the "badge of honor" worth something. I could have actually used that to try to "hype up" one of the small altcoins I was mining but then, once the price falls back down, I risk the fallout from unhappy coiners negatively affecting her.

Tiffany Yep is doing very well and really liked how I use technology. I don't think she's into crypto, though, except possibly how it allows arbitrary data to act like a random bit sequence as far as communications is concerned.
This thread is never about Naomi, its all about the OP's obsesion for Chinese chicks.

Hint : Use forum's advanced search, search for posts made by the OP and the item to search for is "Tiffany Yep" ... and take a clue from the oldest date of the post found and approx. the total posts found by the search, it has been almost a decade.

Also look at the OP's profile picture.  ;)

Not just Chinese chicks - Allie Moore, CaitlinV3, Micah Elizabeth Scott, and Rinoa Super-Genius are definitely not Chinese, to name a few.

Micah and Naomi top my list because they're very unique in the shows they make. Rinoa Super-Genius is another one I consider special.

CaitlinV3, Joanne Chiang, and TastyPC host very similar shows and therefore are less unique.

She send me a lengthy DM.
I won't reveal what's in it, but let's just say, whilst sympathetic to her plight in China, I'm still not convinced she's an innocent victim here.
I think she played hard ball and she lost her Patreon as a result.
She said on twitter her channel is "dead", and I can't see how. She still has 265k subs, a big loyal fan base, and the ability to upload. The lost Patreon money can be made back in other ways, I don't know why she has to stop blogging.
I think I'll stop now, I know enough and my question has been answered, the claims in the most recent Vice response article are true.

If it's not easy for her to directly accept Bitcoin, how about go through a friend? I recall she has close links with Bunnie Huang. Maybe SerpentZA, who I recall moved in from outside China, can open an exchange account?

Good thing there aren't any GPU coins better than Curecoin/Foldingcoin as far as using them to help Naomi goes (very difficult) or I would have a moral dilemma on my hands - contribute a tiny bit towards curing cancer or help a good friend keep her TV show going? There is a CPU coin (earnhoney) that can be easily used to help her, but my old Sandy Bridge is not efficient enough to make it worth mining this time of year. I could use that as an excuse to build a Ryzen machine except the break even period is silly long. I could look beyond mining, as in stuff like TensorFlowing paid surveys (no unobtanium 10nm ASICs, though), but it would take more than a trivial amount of time to develop and that would have to pay back in a reasonable time. I keep my Paypal separate from my "regular" money for many reasons (mainly security and letting machines set my "hobby" budget), besides giving money is a lot more fun when funneling it through electronics with a net gain.

I don't think she has a problem with guys in general, just misogynists. She cast me in a very positive light the first time I used my miners to help her.

The followers doing counter attacks are not entirely controllable from her side. If a real life friend of yours was under attack, you would try to do something to stop the attackers, right?

Steady stream? Only in an ideal world. Mining difficulty is still going up, so the only way to make it steady is to constantly add hashrate to compensate. And the difficulty is already high enough that additional investments in mining hardware take an unreasonable amount of time to pay for themselves.

Chinese government has strict prohibition on private individuals exchanging money. If Chinese government finds out you accept non CNY for goods or for CNY, you go to jail. This even includes antique foreign coin dealers.
Why would USD be fine but Bitcoin not if neither are CNY? And by extension, since there's already a way for USD to work, what about have some third party outside China convert the Bitcoin to USD before sending it on? (In my case, I convert several oddball cryptocurrencies generated by my miners to USD on my side before sending that to her Paypal.)

For those who have used both, what are the pros/cons of Paypal vs. Patreon?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but studies revealed already long ago that the fine art of staring silently at the sky while simultaneously rolling both eyes works much, much better (subjectively and objectively) for testing how good GPUs can upscale.

And that's in a different place on the time-quality tradeoff line. For interactive apps like games, the upscaling must be done fast so as not to introduce unacceptable latency. Not sure about AMD but on Nvidia, there's a functional block (DSR) separate from the shader cores designed specifically for that application.
For video playback, it merely has to keep up with the framerate and latency is irrelevant. The scaling algorithm uses the shaders for that as well as deinterlacing if applicable. Because it often reads several frames ahead to decide the best course of action, there's a mathematical limit on latency regardless of how much processing power is available. (And it expects the frames to be at a consistent framerate, which is often not the case for interactive apps.)
Processing images coming off a telescope is very different and you can afford to spend minutes or more to get a single image. That's well outside the scope of general purpose multimedia apps.

C'mon, don't you ever try to search your own posts that contain the words "Tiffany Yep" ? To anyone who is reading this, that know in person Miss Tiffany Yep, please, warn her, or at least point to this thread and other like this -> Valiant Mike knight is on mission rescuing bikini Miss Wu in the dungeon (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/if-my-mining-adventure-were-a-movie-or-video-game/), personally I'm worry about Miss Yep, probably she should file a restraining order.

As internet never forget, also as a normal human being and a "responsible" adult, its quite disturbing to think about those innocence people that care about you like your parent, sister, brother, close relatives if any, when they found out about your adventure that you've done in pride.

Or even worst for future loved ones like your spouse or kid if any, I really wish you never have children, as it will be really heart breaking moment that someday they will find out their dad/husband had or keep doing these for many-many years, again with great pride.

Are we watching a physco in making ? You remind me of John Hinckley Jr. Obsession with Jodie Foster (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hinckley_Jr.#Obsession_with_Jodie_Foster)

How little do they have to work to qualify as an "artist"? Does that include those who film throwing a carton of eggs at a tree and calling it art? Stuff like that really does give a bad name to artists who genuinely put in a lot of hard work.

For those who like the mix of art and engineering from mostly the art side but find Naomi too "show off", check out CaitlinV3. She likes building PCs that look cool, including DIY covers and whatnot for a unique look. Joanne Chiang and TastyPC (the first one in that category I knew about) also build custom PCs, but no custom parts.

Side note: that former Bitcoiner I know from college also called herself an artist back then. She did enjoy dancing for Bitcoins...

Okay, I got curious and checked. It seems that the Dutch government spends most of the cultural budget on things like theatre groups, orchestras, cinema and literature. Another portion is spent on museums like the internationally renowned Rijksmuseum. It appears that these are almost exclusively things accessible to the general public and serving the common good.

Assuming the budget you mentioned is correct and looking at the number of inhabitants in the Netherlands on the worldometer, all this translates to a relative contribution of a bit over 19 euros. You live in one of the wealthiest nations of the world and feel under 20 euros is too much to spend on cultural matters that benefit all? The greed of some people never ceases to amaze me.

Of course it could all very well earn you money, rather than cost it. A diverse cultural landscape attracts tourists, which offer a large net profit. Apparently tourism in just Amsterdam yields a net profit of 2 to 3 billion, or six to nine times the entire cultural budget.

I need to find better ways to spend my Saturday evenings!

At the risk of going way off topic, what annoys me the most are the subsidies for factory farming, GMOs, and fossil fuels. Lazy "artists" who are just looking for an excuse to not do any work are a non problem in comparison. And don't get me started on those DTV receiver "toys" that were barely worth the post-subsidy price and crippled to the point where you could often get better video quality from Youtube even back then.

Trying to get back on topic, it's clear that the market for "beautiful model" + "electronics/3D printing" videos is far from saturated, so how long before there's another significant player? I recall Naomi even welcomes "competition" in that area, probably because she knows few will show off as much as she does.

I don't consider her a beautiful woman. Skinny, with non existing buttocks and disproportional head an breasts. Sexy? Perhaps. I can see the reasons for arousing some guys.

Horses for courses, her look is not my style either, but I think it safe to say that for probably the majority of hetero men she is pretty attractive.

Is that so?? We should have a poll.
Personally I find her name fairly misleading..

It does not matter how it looks (she wants to look for herself, not because of you - I hate prejudices), important is what's in her head  :-+

Yes, I've also considered that, but judging from the 3d print test video I think it is not.

Yes, that's what we need! A poll about what the predominantly male visitors of an engineering forum think of the attractiveness of a specific female.  :palm:

There's no accounting for taste, and certainly not for hormones. Let's show some restraint.

Even in the videos where she dressed quite modestly (e.g. her signature "work clothes"), she's about as good looking as Joanne Chiang. The "showing off" at times is really to add to the uniqueness and gain some extra views.

her video's are the most distracting technical videos i've ever seen, its identity crisis.
Who expects excellent engineering videos from someone who's primarily an artist? You're probably looking for Micah Elizabeth Scott if you want engineering first, art second.
So you publicly admitting that all those payment you've paid to her, and like this thread creation are purely for bikini art performance instead of technical matter ?  :-DD

On the upside: at least NiHaoMike chooses which artists he likes to support. Over here tax money gets used to support all kind of artists which would otherwise be forced to get real jobs.

There's Art  & "Art " !
Real artists were doing "engineering type stuff" before Engineering was a recognised discipline.

Cellini, Michelangelo, the immortal Da Vinci, & many others produced massive bronze statues which required serious knowledge of metallurgy, casting methods, accurate measurement, & so on.

Da Vinci is claimed by Artists as an Artist, & by Engineers as an Engineer!

The ancient Greeks we call philosophers were also called that because the term and concept of a scientist wasn't a thing back then. I dislike that engineering has become about just dry, functional matters. Look at almost any product on sale today and you see that concept, design and emotion are a large part of what makes or breaks it.

In senior design class, it becomes obvious through unreliable/nonworking projects that there's a huge gap between they teach in the major and what is needed to make a robust, working product.

Teaching can never make an expert, nor even a competent person. Only learning can do that, and learning has to be done by the student, not the teacher. It may even be that the time allotted during a period of formal education is insufficient even for good students to learn the material thoroughly. So the learning even of fundamentals must be continued after graduation.

And that's the role of online television nowadays. As far as practical engineering TV goes, I think Micah Elizabeth Scott has done the best at demonstrating how to design a finished product that includes mechanical design, electronics, and programming. She does, however, jump right into advanced programming and a beginner definitely will not be able to keep up.

Naomi did some tutorials on how to do 3D design, including at least one which is even work safe. April Wilkerson and Laura Kampf do well to show how to make good looking stuff in a machine shop. Jeri Ellsworth did a lot of electronics stuff but hasn't been active in a long time. And I already mentioned three models who enjoy building PCs in an earlier post. The theme is clear: good looks do make content more enjoyable.

I'm sure Jeri is still doing a lot of electronic stuff, and I'm sure she is still very active. Oh, you meant she hasn't been producing videos for you to watch? That's not the same thing at all. Now that I remember, maybe Naomi could host the successor to The Ben Heck Show? Element 14 already has presence in China and they can easily get a lot of good advertising worldwide. Not sure how well donations fit into their business model but they could implement it as "pay what you want" for project plans and other downloadable materials.

Just wondering, is she real?

I think the internet police got it right. If you check this Reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/7zzxyr/naomi_sexy_cyborg_wu_is_a_fake/) look at the image timaz posted of his apartment it has some of the same furniture (like 5 or 6 different pieces) that Naomi has in her videos.  It's clear that timaz was a guru (and clearly a neat freak) in 3D printing circles. She (or he depending which way you look at it) also confessed it's a manufactured persona.

So it's not hard to come to the conclusion after reading the Vice article (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/3kjqdb/naomi-wu-sexy-cyborg-profile-shenzhen-maker-scene) (snippet below) that she is in fact married to a guy who does the same work shes promoting, and by married means living with, and by living with you can assume it's not just her workshop. Unless two workshops per apartment in the "lounge" is a common thing in Shenzen.

Quote
"I saw that video where you say you're [name redacted’s] wife—and I'd like to discuss the unfairness of assuming a woman receives help, just because her partner works/worked in a similar industry."
Note: This was published after Naomi/Timaz started attacking Vice.

The only thing wrong with the whole thing is her doxxing Vice and giving off the impression it's all her work (if it's not). This would have her sponsors and contributors both deceived if true.

Just a theory but perhaps this is why she/he is trying to present a fake name and alias and hit out hard when it looked like the husbands identity could be revealed. The Make CEO retracted his statement calling her fake. But it looks like shame/dox game didn't work with Vice and instead backfired.

This was questioned before, particularly in the Make magazine thread, as if she has someone to create everything and she only presents them. It seems this is not the case, though nobody is 100% sure.

I believe she has admitted she has someone vet/write/translate her posts. Her PM's to me have been lengthy and grammatically perfect English, practically native speaker level. So someone is helping out on that front, and that's probably wise.
As for her doing the stuff, I haven't really seen enough to comment, but I am lead to believe she has done lots of live stuff so does appear to have some legit skills. IIRC Bunnie said she had decent entry level skills.

It's quite common to have people help you with the logistics of your operation. The most popular Youtubers often have editors to edit their videos, people dealing with communication or writing or other support staff on hand. Some have complete crews working on the channel. Granted, even more are one man bands but it's certainly not unique.

Not related at all, it's just you trying to promote your BDD agenda or whatever the reason you keep name dropping Naomi Wu and Tiffany Yep all the time and came back to bump this week old thread.

The subject line of this topic is totally inaccurate  if you follow the real story and chain of events. Wu's still going militant on his/her twitter like they did nothing to cause the whole situation in the first place. The whole thing smacks of someone that thought they could man shame Vice and really screwed up big time.

What I'd personally like to see is instead of Naomi trying to hog the limelight selling her body image to gullible and impressionable minds, how about we start promoting some real woman in electronics. By real I mean not gender transitioning men (who seem to have fine representation), instead a higher proportion of the 50% female population who have no cosmetic surgery. You know, like normal folk that won't make teenage girls/boys think they need to disfigure themselves to get ahead.

Related in that what apparently started or was at least a big contributor to the whole problem was the magazine not allowing the subject to review the content before it goes public. Rinoa did let the subject review the content, even though that had the disadvantage of a big delay. (Compromise: Give a reasonable deadline where if no comment is made by then, interpret it as OK to release.)

She welcomes "competition" although there apparently isn't anyone else interested in doing that quite yet. There's Joanne Chiang who is more or less on par in terms of looks (but is not excessively skinny) but doesn't do very much DIY other than building PCs. There's also CaitlinV3 who is similar but does often DIY custom parts for PCs.

What do you mean by "real woman"? More focus on intelligence/skills? Micah Elizabeth Scott easily wins that. In fact, she often jumps directly into advanced programming and loses the majority of the potential audience who are not able to follow work so advanced. Her popularity? About 1/20th that of Naomi. It's clear the majority prefer to watch a "model" doing something they can probably can do themselves as opposed to watch a "professor" work on something they can't. I don't see a solution to that.

If I was to be interviewed in order for public content to be created about me, I would definitely prefer to be able to review the content before it goes public, to avoid problems caused by a misunderstanding. For example, I would not want the phrase "I use free software I download online" to get misinterpreted as pirating software.

I guess you're not in the target audience. But something must explain why Naomi, Joanne, and April (Wilkerson) are all very popular online. The reality is that good looks do matter to the majority of the audience. (And looking almost flawless even upscaled to 4K is definitely not easy.) There are far more viewers who simply want to relax while watching TV as opposed to thinking hard about the content being presented. Naomi has about 20 times as many viewers as Micah but I would expect a far larger percentage of Micah's viewers to have an advanced knowledge of something engineering related.

Having the subject review an interview beforehand is frowned upon from a journalistic integrity point of view, as has been discussed before. This requirement on her side only adds to the idea that there was an attempt of exerting untowards control, or at least significant inexperience what the standard is.

What is the concern? That the subject could manipulate the content to be misleading? A compromise could be to allow the subject to add comments but not alter the content unless there really was a big misunderstanding. It's even possible to use SHA256 hashes to prove that the content has not been changed since the date the hashes were released.

No journalist should let the subject review or have a say in the contents before it goes live.
Many manufacturers have asked to see my reviews or teardown before they go live, and I tell them all to bugger off.
Vice had every right to refuse to show the article before it went to press.

When I was approached by a big Australian newspaper to respond to what Batteroo had said about me, I simply said no, I wasn't going to take the risk of the newspaper twisting my story, as you don't get to review these things before they go to press.

Yes, they get potential opportunity to control journalist narrative.
In the case of manufacturers for me, they use the excuse "we just want to make sure you haven't made any mistakes". It's bullshit, they want to control narrative.
In this case it turned out to be well founded because Naomi went full nuclear before she had seen the article. Imagine if she had seen it.
That full nuclear option included doxing, and threatening to dox Vice staff further.

I made an announcement on Facebook the first time Naomi was in need for help and how I intended to use my miners to help her. The response from friends was all positive, and that was before Naomi even knew that I was going to help. Then I shared her post and got even more positive responses because now everyone knows I really did help out. I figured out how not to be selfish with the secret tricks I use to boost mining profitability on the energy efficient coins I mine. (Which, if you think about it, would no longer be energy efficient if the difficulty goes way high like what happened with earnhoney.)

In the real world you get situations where people sue the other party into submission to avoid the release of a piece they don't like. Not showing the article beforehand prevents that. Other undesired situation may include sponsors pressuring writers to change an article. To avoid all kinds of subtle or severe pressure it's standard practice to simply not reveal the article until it's revealed to everyone.

But Mike, it might be time to acknowledge that these women aren't waiting for an internet white knight to save them. They will politely take your donations and say favourable things about and to you, but these are women who live from being in the public eye and from donations. Men do the same, but gender seems to be a large part of the motive to donate and follow. Being nice to people and looking favorable is how they make a living, or in some cases an extra buck. However, you can be sure they will keep you at a safe distance from their actual personal lives. Becoming a real friend isn't really an option.

Maybe it'd be better to get yourself an actual girl. Comb your hair and make some nice photos of yourself and get on some dating app or website. Make sure you get one with real girls. Whatever you do, don't mention the internet girls you fancy. Or if you're an adult, you can pay a woman for some physical company. That's apparently legal in some parts of the country. But what do you think about Jodie Foster?
Title: Re: Naomi SexyCyborg Wu's Patreon Shut Down by VICE

What is the concern? That the subject could manipulate the content to be misleading? A compromise could be to allow the subject to add comments but not alter the content unless there really was a big misunderstanding. It's even possible to use SHA256 hashes to prove that the content has not been changed since the date the hashes were released.
Crypto can also be used to guarantee that the content would be readable with a delay - encrypt it, then release it along with part of the key to the public, while the subject gets the whole key. Then they can release the key to get it out sooner, or the community cracks the key (the number of secret bits chosen to give a reasonable delay - actually picking how many is tricky) and the content becomes readable anyways.

The main motivation is to be known as a "great engineer"* among my (other) friends. They all agree with the idea that "sharing is caring". Like I said, the feedback I got was all positive. And if it gets Naomi (or any other content creator, for that matter) to continue making content, that's actually a gift to the entire community!

I have three options with my crypto mining secrets:
1: Keep them a secret and hoard every coin mined. That is the most profitable but selfish option. Not exactly the most positive when trying to make friends.
2: Share them, in which case the mining difficulty skyrockets as the hashrate skyrockets. That's a big negative to everyone mining the coin and causes mining efficiency to plummet. Coiners mining such coins agree to be careful sharing such secrets for that reason.
3: Keep them a secret, but share some of the mined coins. I could in fact share a large fraction of the profits and still lose less than doing option 2. And the coin remains an energy efficient coin.

I did give some thought to starting an organization that accepts Bitcoin and/or Ethereum and converts those into currencies that content creators readily accept. But I think that's an idea better left to someone with actual experience.

*"A good engineer uses technology to help him/herself. A great engineer uses technology to help others in need."

Or if you're an adult, you can pay a woman for some physical company.
Actually hiring a "lab assistant" costs far more than sharing a percentage of mining profits from my small mining cluster. That cluster currently makes about $35/month of coins that convert to Paypal and $25/month of coins that convert to Amazon gift cards, has paid for itself long ago, and only uses about 20W total from my solar power setup.
@NiHaoMike,

But what do you think about Jodie Foster?
An actress without any engineering involvement from what I can find? Too common to be that special.

For reference, Micah, Naomi, and Rinoa are my top three (active/recently active) female TV show hosts. And about the only thing they have in common is that they're ladies with an interest in technology.

As for engineering-related content that is good for subjective testing of 4K upscaling using a GPU, TastyPC, JoanneTechLover, and SexyCyborg have delivered well, listed in the order I discovered them. The first two have gone inactive quite some time ago with little explanation and now there's a big question if/when any of them will make new content. My GPU is probably wondering when it will get to run that fine tuned 4K upscaler again.

In terms of value at time of transaction(s), Joesf Prusa and Dave Jones end up at the top of the list. Only they know what their profit margins are. And because those transactions were in Bitcoin, they were dependent on the time an anonymous (former) Bitcoiner sold me her Bitcoin miner. (That one's a bit more involved because I actually got that for my cousin who wanted to get into crypto but not have to deal with buggy miners.) And all of that was dependent on when a male intern got me into crypto mining, of which recently he discovered what I ended up doing with crypto and was very happy to see what I did!

I support Naomi for similar reasons why I support Nvidia - far from perfect but way ahead of competitors. (That's not even a good comparison anymore because AMD has improved by a lot.)

There ya go Scram, quick trip to Mexico for a cheap couple bags of saline. Bit of hustle on youtube and you could have your very own bitcoin miner.

The tricky bit is walking the streets of Shenzen but if we get over the first hurdle I'm sure we can drum up a gofundme to cover expenses.

Rsjsouza if that post was intended for me, firstly my reply was to Scram not to Mike, secondly it wasn't an insult, it was humor in light of the absurdity of internet celebrity. I'm not concerned who NiHaoMike likes or dislikes, or am racial or gender discriminatory, I'm a supporter of gay rights, pro choice, equality.

Don't forget NiHaoMike bumped this thread after 12 days with no replies deliberately to promote her. She is not a victim or needs white knights saving her. But if someone expects to come to this electronics forum and promote people SUBVERSIVELY AND SPAM LIKE in threads then your motives may be called into question by other members.

In one view people will read the title and see that poor Naomi was attacked by a media outlet. But if you read the back story you will see that she doxed Vice several times and instigated the Make magazine incident as well.

BravoV summed it up, I'd rather read about electronics related posts than being spoon fed propaganda by someone.

It's certainly not my intention to attack Mike. It just seems he's pursuing something in a way that will never lead to what he's actually pursuing. That way he's setting himself up for unhappiness. People get stuck in the narrative they create for themselves and a reality check can bring things back in perspective.

People lie to themselves all the time and if that makes you happy, who's to judge? However, if the narrative actually prevents you from ever achieving what you crave the most it's one of the saddest things. I fear that might be the case here.

$60/month for 20W translates into $600/month for 200W etc, right?
Heck, a single power point at 2000W could bring in $6000/month, right?

...Who cares where does he spend his hard earnhoney money...
Sadly, earnhoney mining is no longer profitable for me - my dated Sandy Bridge E uses too much power mining it. I could build a Ryzen machine that can profitably mine it, but at more than a year to break even on the cost of building the machine, I'll pass. There are coins that are far more profitable to mine.
It's certainly not my intention to attack Mike. It just seems he's pursuing something in a way that will never lead to what he's actually pursuing. That way he's setting himself up for unhappiness. I managed to achieve a high peak right while the mining craze is starting to come to an end. I ended up with a very memorable experience of mining and my friends recognize me as a great engineer.

Of course, a day after I question when there will be another "model and technology" video, the original player - TastyPC - is back in 4K! One source is better than none, but no engineer wants to be reliant on a single source. And SexyCyborg comes closer to my ideal than TastyPC, JoanneTechLover, or CaitlinV3 does - soldering together stuff and designing a 3D printed case to put it in is a bit more advanced than plugging together a bunch of subassemblies designed to go together and putting them into a premade case designed to enclose them.

There's still lots of room to do even better, of course, and I would like to see another "model" get an interest in technology and start her own TV show with an even greater focus on technology. I suppose Tiffany Yep could get into the game, but she's too busy with real work. And since FPGA programming is most commonly done at work, she'll have to dress work safe so as not to cut out a significant share of viewers, at which point she would basically be another Micah Elizabeth Scott. (Maybe "show off" videos for hobbyists and text/work-safe pictures for work?)

How much market is there for advanced electronics/programming videos presented by a beautiful model?

You forgot the cost of equipment and exchange/mining limits. The exchanges of those coins are purposely designed to limit (based on IP address, with a blacklist on all known VPN ranges) how much can be exchanged specifically to prevent someone building their own "supercomputer" to mine with. Many years ago, Perk coiners did build some very elaborate clusters, then the exchanges imposed a limit and a lot of coiners had to downsize. Some went to the effort to get a second or even third ISP to get around the IP limits but there's no way that would be profitable nowadays.

I'm sure good looks do carry a competitive advantage, although I suppose presenting the information in an easy to understand format is far more important. Back when Jeri Ellsworth was making videos, her looks were a very significant part of her fame.

It seems like there's a certain sense of sadness when a beautiful woman in technology goes largely out of view of the general public. The first example I know was a friend of mine who started in HVAC service, to learn about the "real world" side of HVAC. (I think of her as a little like Rinoa Super-Genius - strong and hardworking.) She had a very easy time selling preventative maintenance and I'm sure her combination of good looks and good skills were the reason why. Then she became a firmware engineer at a HVAC manufacturer, mostly never to be seen again by the users of the products she works on.

The second example was that anonymous former Bitcoiner. She "Bitcoined" (some mining but mostly "live streaming" for Bitcoins - something better done with Ethereum nowadays) to pay for medical school, then graduated and became a doctor. The community felt sad to see her leave, but at least they acknowledged that they should be feeling good that Bitcoin literally played a role in helping people feel better.

I'm sure good looks do carry a competitive advantage, although I suppose presenting the information in an easy to understand format is far more important. Back when Jeri Ellsworth was making videos, her looks were a very significant part of her fame.

Being female and having looks does make for a competitive advantage in terms of media exposure.
For example, Jeri would never have gotten those articles written about her if she wasn't a compelling "story" to the media. Never would have happened to a fat nerdy male MIT graduate who did the exact same stuff, as there is no "story" there.
But Jeri's success was in large part to her fairly unique content.

Similar thing with Limor Freid and her pink hair and piercings, it creates a compelling media narrative.
Taking nothing away from either of course in their ability and success and hard work etc. But there is an advantage in having a compelling story, that's just the way the media works.
Namomi has (had?) that too, although not nearly as remotely talented as Jeri & Limor, she's pretty much relying on her extreme looks and uniqueness. And hey, there is a market for that too, but it's not the same market as most technical people on here are into.

But when it comes to success on Youtube it's a brutal and fairly level playing field, and being female and having looks often accounts for very little. You are selling your content to the individual in a crowded market, not to a magazine that wants a nice juicy front cover photo and story.
Naomi does go the extreme though, so that's a market right there as she has found. Shame she has seemingly tossed it all away.

Actually, "worthy of 4K upscaling" is more about the lack of flaws that would be worsened at higher resolution. I remember some article a long time ago to the effect that Britney Spears didn't want to be filmed in 1080p because that would make the flaws stand out. Interesting note: I once played around with the shaders in mpv and found that if I apply a LPF on a Britney Spears video, she looks better but the rest of the video looks "wrong", spoiling the effect. I have a smartphone that does some DSP trickery to make people look better without messing up the whole picture. And I have played with a prototype smartphone that tries to "grade" how beautiful someone is, but doesn't do well at it...

As far as "large breasts" goes, I understand it's something often desired because it's "cool" and a lot of models have them. But at the same time, that's a disadvantage when working in tight spaces. I remember Rinoa Super-Genius saying that she is thankful she *doesn't* have large breasts because they would get in the way. On the other end, Naomi has said something about how proud she is of her insane chest-to-waist ratio. It's all down to personal preference.
Just wondering, Mike: do you have any male friends? Can't recall seeing you refer to one as 'he' or 'his'.  Maybe blokes just fly under your radar?
They are more common, so more difficult for them to do something noteworthy because of competition. A little bit like how 1TH/s is a tiny hashrate for Bitcoin, but very large for Realbucks.
