ElectroTech doesn't like links anywhere else, even if the links provide a detailed answer to a question.

It's just as well.  "I must use a PIC16F628A for my project.  HELP!!!! Do it for me!" seems to be the rule rather than the exception there, and the old-boy-club believes programming must be difficult - nothing but assembler will do, but only after every page of the data sheet is memorized.  Heaven help the guy who wants to flash a couple LEDs without devoting months of study to it... unless it's a homework problem, in which case somebody will code it for him.

You're in good company.

You aren't the first person who has ended up here because of being banned (or left) for that reason!

Some time ago I tried to give the owner of Electro-tech-online the benefit of the doubt in relation to this, after a thread on this forum about the issues. But then I got flat out lied to and duped into removing some posts on the EEVblog forum for my trouble   :(
Never again.

A rule here is that you can post a link to any other forum or content you like, even Electro-Tech-Online  ;D
Indeed, sharing and pointing to other resources is very actively encouraged!

Yeah, I don't understand why so many blog owners get their shorts in a knot about links posted on their site(s).  If the link is relevant, and is not spamming one blog and trying to actively send traffic to the other blog, then it should be allowed and encouraged, as you've said, Dave.  Good on ya!

And I take issue with the (many) blog owners (and moderators) who seem to be on a power-trip or something, and quash any discussion not directly related to the original question.  It often turns out that an open discussion leads to more interesting things, but many sites delete or block postings that start to get off topic, even if it's still otherwise related to the blog in general. It makes no sense to me.

-Cheers!

Posting something like "You should ask on EEVBlog" goes against good netiquette but a link to here that provides an answer shouldn't be an issue.

Some people are a bit touchy when it comes their sites

I don't even have a problem with that.
If I know that a "competing" forum has a user base that is more likely to answer someones question, then I'll direct them there myself.
Likewise I promote other good content blogs on my main page, even though they are "competing" in terms of content.

There are quite a few links to eevblog on ETO, especially the multimeter shootouts.  I've posted them myself, without a problem.

Perhaps the context of the links (ie. self-promotion) should be considered.  Especially the now-deleted thread about the "upcoming Brymen Tech review", which probably went over the top.

Same old story.

That place used to be quite decent until the administrator took more of an active role in moderating. Now it's gone to shit.

Speaking of content and self promotion, there is out there hundreds of young people who does computer hardware related presentations, and they put their name on them.
From the beginning of internet, every new review that was on-line, was a good reason so the people to feel happy about it and spread the word around.
Their opinion, positive or negative about the review, always had a second value.
Simply because you can not have even a strong debate, for one review that is not even there !!

I had never offer even a dollar as contribution to electro-tech-online,
If I have to buy them out, so to like me, I will not.

I have 100 messages over there, and never ever, had even a tiny debate with any one.
If they got in panic, because I asked the question like : is there any interest about posting my review in the future..?
Then, they worth to be ignored for life.

Being a long term member or helpful means nothing to the idiot administrator. I had neen a member for about four years, had nearly 10,000 posts to my name and one of the highest karmas on there but it didn't stop him from kicking me out like a piece of rubbish. What really annoyed me was him banning links to a site I post at despite me having lots of links to his site in my signature.

I'm actually thinking of rejoining, not to post but to get access to some of the attachments I posted there which I can no longer access. The only trouble is I don't want to get sucked into posting.

Impressive [ bolded item].  Based on hits on older discussion forums electro-tech, allaboutcircuits, and for a baseline using element14, eevblog is both unique in content and has grown well.

Considering there are many older boards out there that are far below 0 and don't even make the graph, such as http://www.dutchforce.com/~eforum/

Chart from alexa.com, for details see alexa.com on individual boards and check 'search analytics'.

Most of what can be found on electrotech or allaboutcircuits can easily be found if the posters read Art of Electronics well, and what they post eventually becomes redundant as good information through old posts are already archived.  Then again, why take the word or post of a nameless poster when you can be far more sure about a concept in electronics if Horowitz and Hill said so?  It has been peer reviewed by readers, practicing EEs and professors in EE for over 10 years?

eevblog has a heavy dose of folks who are more experienced.  If you look at alexa analytics a large number of search words for eevblog are specific products, so readers are already doing something that requires test equipment or have moved ahead enough to want to get such gear.   There is very little gear discussion on the 'other' forums.

That said, if you want to hear or speak to an audience who are really into electronics, who build, buy, work and sell either services or devices using electronics, you can't beat being here.  That means your product reviews, tear downs, hacks, mods, are reaching people who truly can appreciate it and newbies can see exactly what they can become if they persevere.

Thus, I find the other forums don't amount to much, as they cater mostly to beginners so its not a loss not being there.
