I made a grave mistake!
« on: November 25, 2019, 03:14:53 pm »
Two grave mistakes, actually.

I posted something to the TEA thread.  :-\
And to the "what have you bought today" thread.  :palm:

Now I can't get rid of the notifications!

They don't show up in the "Notification" list in my profile, I cannot "Unnotify" them and I keep seeing them in my "Updated Topics" list.

How do I rid myself of those ghosts I summoned?

I haven't experienced that myself, try looking for the posts in question, click on "modify" then "attachments and other options" and uncheck "notify me of replies"?

I don't enable notifications either in general.

OK, sorry about that. :-DD )

Delete those posts. Anyway soon they'll be forever lost in the middle of pile of comments nobody will bother to read.

No, a grave mistake is one that includes a `, and an acute mistake is one that includes an ´.  I know this is true, because I have an accent.

1. Click “show new replies to my posts”.
2. Select the checkboxes for the threads you want to ignore.
3. Click “Ignore topics”.

1. Click “show new replies to my posts”.
2. Select the checkboxes for the threads you want to ignore.
3. Click “Ignore topics”.

That's kind of "back asswards", no? It may be appropriate for those two particular threads. But will an ignored topic still show up in the unread posts? If not - not something that can be applied in general.

Delete those posts. Anyway soon they'll be forever lost in the middle of pile of comments nobody will bother to read.

Yeah, again, appropriate for those two threads, not in general. Also, skimming through a high volume thread to find your own posts is tedious. Going through the posting history in your profile isn't much better as there's no search function there. This forum software really is kind of archaic, no?

I haven't experienced that myself, try looking for the posts in question, click on "modify" then "attachments and other options" and uncheck "notify me of replies"?

Probably the "best" solution, but even more tedious than just deleting the posts.

Going without notifications - nope, not an option.

You can search for any text in any user's posts but you need to click the search button on the left instead of using the quick search box on the right.

Either use https://www.eevblog.com/forum/search/?advanced;search= and insert the relevant username, or use google.

Emphasis mine. I sure know a troll when I see one.

Also, the advanced search doesn't let you search for just "any contribution by a user". You have to enter some keyword and no wildcards allowed. Neither convenient nor practical.

I just tried that - "modify" will not let you edit the notification options... |O

So, deleting your post seems to be the only option (apart from a global "ignore this thread") that will work.

So... explain clearly what you want.

The two threads you listed are ones many users ask how to hide from the "new replies" list, since they have so much traffic. And I've told you how to do that. So what do you want? You've told us what supposedly doesn't work, but you haven't actually stated what you want, and it's not what others in your situation have wanted.

He's not trolling, what he said is absolutely correct.

And while you're correct that the advanced search doesn't let you search for all of a user's posts, you don't need to search for that. Just click their name, and then on their profile summary, just click "show posts".

I was referring to the "most" of "us", which puts me into a corner away from the "normal" people, who all get along without using notifications, like him. Which is, IMHO, bullshit. I seriously doubt "most" forum users don't use this feature. I called him a troll for that.

Then, I know I can get a list of my own posts. It's, like, 15 odd pages long with no possibility to break it down by board or topic. That makes searching for a post long gone a tedious task. Advanced Search will allow me to limit the search space to certain boards at least, but not without giving a keyword to search for. So I'm no wiser than before.

BTW, in my list of "new replies" I don't get a checkbox to "Ignore topic". I searched my forum setting but I cannot find an option that would make it appear...

So... explain clearly what you want.

The two threads you listed are ones many users ask how to hide from the "new replies" list, since they have so much traffic. And I've told you how to do that. So what do you want? You've told us what supposedly doesn't work, but you haven't actually stated what you want, and it's not what others in your situation have wanted.

I'm looking for a solution to get these topics out of my "new replies" list, and only out of there. The "Ignore" option, as I read in the documentation, will also hide the topic from "show unread since last visit". This is _not_ what I want. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

EDIT: I just noticed that "Updated Topics", as I said in the opening post, is not something most users will be familiar with. It's the equivalent of "show new replies" when using the mobile theme. I realize that this was somewhat unclear. By bad. I use the mobile theme on my phone and the default theme on the laptop. I don't get the "Ignore topic" checkbox with either of them.

Honestly, I don't think he was referring to a specific feature like notifications. But if he was, I agree, in that I don't think most users use any kind of notifications here, except for special threads where they expressly want to be notified.

For what it's worth, the orange "NEW" buttons will show up for ignored threads in the forums themselves, so if you navigate to where they reside, you can still click the NEW button to see what's new to you.

Go into the account theme settings (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=theme ) and change "show quick moderation" (or whatever it's called) to checkboxes. (No idea why the default for this seems to vary for different people, IIRC. Either that or it must be manually set and I did it so long ago I forgot.)

I hate notifications on principle: their whole purpose is to interrupt me and distract me from what I ought to be doing. Basically I choose when to look at something, not when something burbles "look at me look at me".

On this forum my technique is to
  • click the "Show new replies to your posts" link at the top left, read and deal with them
  • click the "Show unread posts since last visit", select and read the few that might be interesting

I see that sanity prevails in others, also. I have had a smartphone for about 7 years now, and for at least the last 4 or 5, I had it *permanently* silenced; I mean NO ringers, NO bloops or blurps, no dings, no rings, NO notifications, no vibrations... NOTHING, because someone ELSE'S "urgent" ain't MY "urgent".

In addition, I have noticed, over the years, that the need to habitually grab my phone with its poppy, eye-catching primary colours (it's designed that way on purpose OF COURSE), as smokers do a cigarette, just for something to distract me, increasing to a point where my attention span became HUGELY impacted and fragmented, simply by the "fear of missing out" - scroll...scroll...scroll... through endless miles of utter drivel and hyperbole, nonsense on antisocial media, "news" sites, Google, etc etc.

Well, for the last 5 days, I made a firm and conscious, calm decision to turn my phone off 23 hours and 50 mins per day MINIMUM (usually off all the time, for days, actually) and to leave it upstairs, festering and abandoned, with my growing disinterest towards it (thankfully) and my attention span, deep peace and ability to focus PROPERLY, fully restored to pre-smartphone state. It seems the whole world has gradually become deeper and deeper entrenched in this horse sh## modern western society, where people feel compelled to HAVE to be connected, for no sane reason, 247-365... and that's utter lunacy. In fact, this lunacy has become SO BAD, that lunatics are now happily handing over £1,000++ for A PHONE!

Madness. Well, I am happy without mine, and may shortly sell it (Xiaomi RedMi Note 7) and a couple of others (Moto G7 Plus, and a load of others) and buy a Rigol 'scope and a arb func gen. :D

Sorry, but you are guilty of the same "assumption" of which you accuse others.  You have no factual basis to make such a statement, so while you may disagree, going the extra step and labelling someone a troll is a step too far.

I, for one, do not, have not and don't ever intend to use notifications.  (I spend more than enough time here as it is.)

FWIW it works for me, I used this topic to check:

Had asked for notifications in my first contribution (to what now looks like yet another derailing subject), once I got the notification tggzzz had replied I came back and edited my post by only un-checking the notification box.

Haven't been getting the hassle since.
Maybe you need to uncheck on several posts in a same topic? (PITA I must say...)

What you are asking for is a change to the CORE functionality of SMF and not a simple setting that Dave can flick to enable you to ignore or remove the notification under "new replies to your posts". I am not aware of ANY mod that works in the current version to make this happen and hacking the core code is a very bad idea. This one is not ported to the current version https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1193

This is not as a few above have suggested anything to do with SUBSCRIBED topics which is a user select feature to enable or disable for any topic REGARDLESS of if you have posted or not in.

As to making a Grave mistake of posting in TEA  >:D :-DD

I checked, there are none. And, please go back to the post you edited and check if the "notify me" box is really cleared. I had assumed it was, but each time I went back to the post it was checked on again.

PITA, indeed. I'm glad it's not just me.

The basis for the statement was the clearly antisocial pattern of isolating someone with a complaint or problem, ridiculing his concern. "You're holding it wrong!"

Most don't have a problem with this as their Profile settings are as follows:

Profile>Modify Profile>Notifications:
Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email (but please don't reply to these emails.)

Both ^ are unselected.

Further select these:
For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me: Instantly- but only for the first unread reply.

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of: Replies and moderation.
