I was born in Ukraine, so I speak Russian and Ukrainian, but my parents moved to France when I was 9, so I live in France now and speak French. I got interested in English because of computers and electronics, but I wasn't able to have a fluent conversation until I met a few American people here  ;D

My family didn't emigrate out of Taiwan to New Zealand until I finished 4th grade so I can speak and read mandarin just fine. However I have forgotten how to write it and the only words I can write are my name and the numbers. Ironically my mother was an elementary school teacher in mandarin and held tutoring classes in Auckland to this day. She just didn't teach me or my brother. :P Can still type it though.

Also took Japanese in high school only because my mother wanted me to. I wasn't motivated so never got past the basics despite 3 years+tutoring. Ironically these past few years I have been picking up more Japanese than I ever did in school because I'm into anime and I've been steadily learning just by listening the language ;D. On top of that chinese and taiwanese gets a natural advantage by being able to read kanji.

Interesting thing about accents, my brother who's only a year older has a noticeable Taiwanese accent yet mine is pretty much kiwi. So it appears that the cut off age for accent appears to be 10.

Mom also has pretty atrocious english, and she claims that she was top of her english class during uni (nobody believes her).

With the internet maintaining a language is pretty easy, just browse forums in that language from time to time.

I'm from Finland, so my first language is finnish. English I learned in the school, as well as swedish, which is the second language here. In the high school I started german and studied it in the university too. And in the university I took a couple of courses japanese.

As a result nowadays I speak fluent finnish and english. I can keep up with a conversation with swedish and german. My japanese has rusted and is only at tourist level.

Anyone know why its called the queens english when a lot of the words come from Indian origin, Aincent Egpyt, etc..? Interesting

Short answer - Our Queen Elizabeth II speak "Queen's English"! When Charlie Boy takes over, it will be "King's English"  ;)

Another answer I can give is that the English language is a mongrel language going back a long time just like the English people whose origin can be traced to the Romans, Saxons, Celtics, Vikings etc hence the words can be traced to those people. It is perfectly natural for foreign words to be incorporated into the English lexicon if there isn't already a word. "Bungalow" is an example of an Indian ( Hindi probably ) word taken in. A German once said to a British journalist,"In your language you have the perfect word for it, 'Schadenfreude!' "  :)

You can do anything with the right attitude and a hammer.
