I treated myself (pic)
« on: January 01, 2011, 02:43:13 pm »
Is was the time between Chrismas and New year, & having a little bit of money left over after buying all my presents I decided it was time to buy myself one :)

I was considering perhaps a new HTC phone or digital camera, but my mind was changed as I was thinking about the problems I've had recently with my PSU.. were the CC mode on one side wouldn't work at all. After speaking to a few people I found that this was not an unknown problem with these cheapo PSU's, in fact some folk had no CC mode at all.

So after making my mind up, and retiring my previous PSU to odd jobs. I bought this :) Thought you guys would like to see it...

Oooh, 1mv resolution!

Can you take the cover off and post some pics of the insides?

Does Thurlby Thandar make this power supply themselves or are
they rebadging another design?

@ Shafri.. You can get this unit a bit cheaper than the price I paid for it but there would have been a month wait. Farnell have it in stock..

Yes :) +VAT it was actually over £800

I made the mistake of buying a cheap one first time around and it bit me. I wasn't going to make that mistake again :)

WOW! £800 on a PS, you must be caked!
I think my main PS; an old (1970s vintage) Farnell supply cost me about 20!, although that was quite a few years ago now.
Although, admittedly, its not as fancypants as yours!

Believe me my friends.. I am about as far as you can get from being loaded and I'm in the red most of the time. In fact the only way I could possibly afford this supply was with some money I had saved up myself over a few months (Yes I actually went in the black for while :) ) plus a £300 gift I got for Christmas.

I'm back on the bones of my butt again now (Well almost!) But at least I've now got a good PSU to use, Instead of the one I was using previously which didn't work properly.

Regards

yea I hear you, I bought the Rigol scope and was in the red for two months, my dad declared me mad (and this was before I bought a house or was even looking). But it was worth it, Hr sort of see's my point now that I've hacked it to a model that currently is worth twice what I paid for it and that was before I got a £50 refund from the seller, unfortunately I had to sell my old analogue scope to help pay for it.

I got ya Simon. It's great when you make something work and it ends up worth a lot more than it was beforehand. I always feel that way when overclocking CPU's and GPU's. The majority of the time with computer components you can end up with performance from cheaper components that match parts that are way more expensive, so you end up feeling as though you've saved yourself quite a bit of money.

It seems a real pain not being rich though when you have hobbies that ya could spend a ton of money on. Mind due having a millions in the back would bring it's own set of problems too I guess. In fact I know couple of people who are loaded with money yet they always seem far from happy people to me.

oh the rich ones are the real grumpy sods, they end up making not spending their money a hobby

I'd just love to have a fair bit more than I do as really it makes life easier not that I'm not willing to work on things rather than have them provided and I'd still be the same person

They really are mate. Believe it or not we have Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC) living only a few streets from were we are and I regulary see him in our local village.. Him and his missus always look like saddest people on the planet. Wayne Rooney used to live in the same road as Gerrard a while back and he was the same... 50 billion quid in the bank yet as misserable as sin.

I tell ya having less IS definately more, personality wise etc. Although as you say having a few thousand or so to throw around would be fantastic for ordinary folk like us.

The problem is with people that get millions is they don't appreciate money anymore, and it'sd those people who always seem to get more & more money thrown at them daily, but give someone who hasn't  got much 5 grand, and it's like they've won the lottery.

*Rant over* :)

regards
