Anyhow, just wait until MS buys Canonical (yes, I already hinted that once.)
Then the real fun will begin!

A problem with Linux is the "community", and the overwhelming lack of coherency and uniformity. Another HUGE problem, most nerds seem to miss (likely due to absent social skills) is the "why" of why macOS and Windows succeed - they do not have a pity party and rant, and behave like "the underdog" - they have a vision (well, Apple do), and they SELL their products unashamedly, instead of cowering in a corner - "Please, why don't you want to try ME?" like the insecure bloke at a school disco, EXUDING desperation and insecurity.

Make a BETTER product, IGNORE everyone else and what they are "doing", and KEEP IN LANE - focus - IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE the others, and refine YOUR strengths. Apple seemed to manage it (and HOW!), don't be pathetic and "downtrodden" - the hardware companies don't "owe" anything to Linux vendors - hardware is LITERALLY MADE FOR WINDOWS AND MACOS, BECAUSE THEY SELL MOST, because a uniform, PAID FOR, supported product = ££££ and simple, predictable products for NORMAL USERS.

I was once that VERY arrogant, annoying Linux "advocate" who reminded everyone of the "virtues" of "freedom". What a CROCK. Life is short - a tool works well, it sells well and is recommended, END OF.

The problem is with all the PC distro's, linux itself is indeed in all those things that do not require a PC desktop environment. Android and whatever apple run are as close as successful linux get.

Please articulate that a bit more clearly, thanks Simon.

If it took over the world I suspect most things would remain the same.

The core would function as expected and reasonably efficient. People of various distros would argue and go to war over silly things. As you move further away from the core code you will start getting into things that work randomly because of poor quality coding and the various format issues. People with the knowledge and skills to make it linux work, those people of course will make plenty of money and do well in society while those that don't will have to live on the lower rungs of society.

Karel:
"What do you anticipate Microsoft will do next?"

Microsoft will switch to Linux and keep selling their software on top of Linux. And it will cost the Windows users as much as before.
At the same time will the Linux community get face-stomped by hordes of Windows users, all trying to learn everything there is to
learn about Linux and in record-breaking time.
Some long-time Linux supporters will switch to Microsoft in a heart beat like cold-hearted back-stabbers, while others die
the slow death of the White Knight in the most epic drama the Linux community has ever seen, before the Linux community itself
disappears and we will all have turned into "the new Windows user".

Once it's all done and over, and Microsoft has taken over Linux with its hordes of Windows users, will you either be the
new slave of the Microsoft empire or you will have found refuge under a tiny bridge, just next to the one where all the
FreeBSD trolls live, and where you'll then be telling tales of Linux's past.

They tried to get ahead of government mandates with as of yet unnecessary CSAM scanning and had to walk back.

You could argue they did it because they saw it coming, but they did compromise ahead of time.

PS. I'll never understand how an engineer can cheer on Apple. Apple got where it is because of the openness of PC and hardware market in general. So they are the first to find how to create a successful consumer electronic ecosystem out of it, build on hardware/store sales rather than advertising, great for them.  Consumer electronic ecosystem is a new natural monopoly though. They are still sharp because there is still some dying competition running on momentum keeping them sharp. Apple is the death of consumer electronic engineering, once Apple is the only game in town why even make a startup to get bought by Apple? At that point they've got you over a barrel, just as all their customers. With their competition, progress dies.

If you're just going to ignore me, I'm just going to repeat myself.

They tried to get ahead of government mandates with as of yet unnecessary CSAM scanning and had to walk back.

You could argue they did it because they saw it coming, but they did compromise ahead of time.

--- Quote ---I doubt Apple are ever going to be "the only game in town" - that is a fantasy.

--- End quote ---

If you understood why I said they are the death of consumer electronic engineering, you could have left out all that straw manning.
