Size of semiconductor companies
« on: October 12, 2018, 04:39:12 pm »
I was randomly curious about how big some of these companies are. For example, Microchip, ST, etc and was surprised by how small they're reported as being on LinkedIn. TI and NXP are in-line with what I was expecting.

Big in what way?  Sales revenue, factories, chips sold per year, headcount, sales offices?  For all US companies you can get anything you want from their annual reports.

Here is a summary of Intel's 2d Qtr 2018 report - sales of $17 billion for the quarter so somewhere around $68 billion for a year.  It's up 15% year over year.

I meant headcount wise. With the vast portfolio that Microchip has, I think it's a bit amazing that they're doing all that with 5,000 people.

The wiki page for microchip says 18,000 employees. I don’t think either LinkedIn or Wikipedia would be a reliable source without some sort of reference, but I’d trust the wiki figures more

I would bet that their chips are made in a contract foundary in Taiwan or China.  Those workers wouldn't show up in headcount.

They actually have three wafer fabrication plants in USA and two test and assembly plants in Thailand and Philippines, so quite many workers included in their headcount.

The right answer for Microchip is in their annual report: 14,234 employees as of March 31, 2018.  I don't  know if that includes the 4,800 they picked up when they bought MicroSemi (probably) but it does include the Atmel employees.

https://www.microchip.com/sec/annual/FY18/Form%2010-K%20filed%205-18-2018.pdf

It's all in there!  It just turns out to be in the 'least usable form' spread over 131 pages.
