is there one?
If you wanted to find out what kind of batteries were for sale in 1940 in factories and in stores? And tidbits of information about them like common issues, weird behavior (maybe like notorious battery manufacturers which had a propensity for destroying equipment.. maybe a battery plague (like with those panasonic caps in the 90's), etc.
Not quite as interesting as tubes but still
is there more then this? Did people just not make lots of different batteries like today?

and how about safety and fire issues related to HT batteries?

Try searching for advertisments and vintage radioamatuer magazines.

While not a database it will provide you with some info.

hm, I wonder if you can find something independent from a electronics magazine or something.
Advertisements won't tell you the real history.
like analysis documents

There is a company that still makes pretty much every battery type ever made, forgot what they were called. But they are relatively pricey, have plain white casings, and do not often come in rechargeable varients.
I'll do some digging.
