Flexible Friction Arm Holder
« on: December 28, 2018, 11:01:37 pm »
Thought I would share this method for holding things while working on them.
The arms are called friction arms that are generally seen used for holding dial indicators or cameras.
I decided to put clamps on both ends to create a flexible holding arm support. The attached picture shows
a control panel from a surface grinder being held up by two arms while I work on it. I have also used this type of support to
hold circuit boards and hold cables and connectors in alignment  for soldering.

This looks like a superior bit of kit. Good job.

The arms are common. But, I haven't seen these clamps. Did you manufacture them yourself? If purchased, how about a link? Close up pictures, too, please and thank you...

Do a search on ebay for friction arm clamp. Those will show arms that come with one clamp. You can find single clamps for sale as well.
Make sure you get an arm that has 1/4-20 threads on both ends.

A few more examples of use can be found in a post I made at
http://www.zenith.aero/profiles/blogs/starting-wing-skins-and-a-few-idea

Noga does make better arms, but are also more expensive. I use Noga for holding dial indications.
However the cheap arms work well enough for general work holding.

The only mod I made was that I had a problem with clamps not staying threaded on tight to the arm. I
used a little bit of loctite on the thread to keep the clamp on.

I posted a video on youtube showing various ways I have used the clamps.
