Full-screening the video usually makes it look a lot better, for me.

Depends more on the original format, some are truly horrible. WMV can get truly terrible, let alone those who still use RM. I prefer plain MP4 or Ogg. I have one media player that is trully picky as to input video, if it is not exactly as required it does not play, or stutters, but what do you expect of a $20 unit. At least audio is usable without much trouble.
