Are you currently in Russia? The issue is that you would need to get work authorization, and many employers may not want to deal with that. Otherwise I see no issues. You do need to be competitive on the market, of course. Simply being an American does not put you forward in any way.
I worked in Russia at companies that hired foreigners, and it was fine. But from their perspective it was a fight and the only reason they were doing it is that they really wanted to be in Russia. As usual, working abroad you will see more general bureaucracy-type issues than local people. But it is definitely possible.
