International working (specifcally in Russia) as an American
(1/1)
PythonGuython:
Hey guys, first poster here. I'm an electrical engineering and Russian student. I don't have many people in my life with much experience in either of those fields so I was hoping I could get some perspective from some of you.
I really want to work or live abroad in a Russian speaking country one day, or at least use the Russian language in a professional setting. Do you think there are opportunities to do that? I've never met anyone who has interned abroad, is that a thing that happens? And if so, where do I even begin to find opportunities like that? Whenever I mention Russian at career fairs they tend to laugh, which I suppose is understandable.

Are you currently in Russia? The issue is that you would need to get work authorization, and many employers may not want to deal with that. Otherwise I see no issues. You do need to be competitive on the market, of course. Simply being an American does not put you forward in any way.
I worked in Russia at companies that hired foreigners, and it was fine. But from their perspective it was a fight and the only reason they were doing it is that they really wanted to be in Russia. As usual, working abroad you will see more general bureaucracy-type issues than local people. But it is definitely possible.
