Title: Inventing Original Silicon Devices
Post by: jonovid on November 03, 2019, 05:02:29 pm
prototyping, designing printed circuit boards from scratch is a known process, but what about the next step up?
what if you have a brilliant idea for a new silicon device?
who gets to say what is made in the silicon real estate development process.
can anyone crowd fund a new silicon device? if no such silicon device does exist.
can anyone that is not part of a corporate multinational re-design old silicon devices for a new market.

Yes, but...
There are services that will make whatever silicon you design, but they are expensive: https://www.mosis.com/ (https://www.mosis.com/)
Also, to the best of my knowledge, the whole field is a giant patent minefield and the design software costs a pretty penny.

It takes a lot of expertise to develop even the simplest silicon device. However, anyone with deep enough pockets can hire people with the necessary expertise, rent access to the necessary tools, and get a foundry and an assembly and test company to make the parts. It does take deep pockets, though.
