At the end the gallium penetrated to the battery pack and let out the lithium (dark gray element).

This is another example of just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.  That was expensive, trashing a new iPhone.

With the tens of millions of views destroying perfectly good phones has gained him, I imagine he's made a pretty penny.

  • Why shouldn't we question everything?

I'm all for destroying smartphones in novel and entertaining ways, but he really didn't think that through beforehand did he?

Overheated the gallium, didn't have a plastic spatula ready (what, did he think the liquid was going to sit on top of the case?), got gallium on a screwdriver, being surprised when fragments of aluminum-gallium crumble shorted out something in the phone, then when he washed it and the battery shorted out into the gallium-crumble mess, and leaked gunk (what's the reaction of lithium battery guts and gallium?) handled the gunk with bare hands.

Crazy.

It would have been a lot more interesting/entertaining if he had a clue.  But it was still slightly interesting.

I am with TerraHertz on this one.
Aluminium, Gallium, Lithium potentially toxic cocktail on his hands.
What a twat.
Where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?

expensive to the tune of ~-$1000, as in he made at least 1K in 20 minutes.

Just piling on the criticism, I can't help but think that sandpaper would have been a better solution for the "scratching" part...

As far as i remember chemistry, adding the water produced aluminium hydroxide, a fairly corrosive base.
I'm surprised he hadn't consider that gallium is a conductor, so he could have shorted everything under the back. Battery, for example.
A battery like that can vent some very interesting chemicals, and if you were sleeping in the same house with it, then you'd wake up short of breath for the rest of your life - instant disability by lungs being mostly dissolved.

That bottle of Gallium is about $200, but if rumours are true you can earn more money from Youtube videos with millions of views.

was he just expecting it to affect only the rear panel or something? complete lack of anything informational... other than i put gallium on a phone and it broke, he's also a dumbass for not wearing gloves, but thats his loss

i actually have 30 grams of gallium here in the lab, keep meaning to do some experiments with different metals... wanted to see differences between tin, copper, lead, magnesium, iron etc, one day i'll get around to doing it.

My company supplies us with iPhones.  I just got upgraded to an iPhone 6.  I do like it better than the 4S I had.  Personal phone is a cheap Samsung.  I have always liked the Samsung.  Not sure why we don't have Samsung smartphones but my guess is that someone much higher up the food chain really likes iPhones.

What an utter cocksocket. To think there must be at least one family missing somebody who jumped from a Foxconn building when that particular phone was the last straw for them on the assembly line... :palm:

That's a bizarre connection to draw... if people are jumping off Foxconn buildings for every iPhone sold, surely the the immorality of buying that phone isn't at all contingent on what you choose to do with it?

Thats a lot of hate for a dude making a quick video and few thousand dollars :)
He didnt claim to be scientist, this wasnt some grand experiment, it was pure 'will it blend' entertainment.

Are you mental? Will it blend was entirely scientific.
