Greetings EEVBees:

--See below article from The Register.

--Personally, I generally prefer my phone to have sound, before I say it works.

"This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us."

Western Union telegraph company memo, 1877.

Apparently speaker failure in those things is common. I know someone who handles their support and she mentioned this jsut the other day.

By the same token, they are incredibly loud. Especially given such tiny speakers.

Six months? Is this phone coated with an antifouling? It could be trapped in a thick mud pocket that protected it though. Or the lake was cold enough to prevent fouling, or a dead lake. But... He saw it an recovered it. TBH this story smells like a bad fish.

These phones are fairly well sealed. I wouldn't be surprised if an air pocket was trapped inside the chassis that protected the electronics.

Yepp, Toughbooks are great. A friend of mine used one for years when he went mapping in the Amazon. After work he just cleaned off the mud with a shower.
For workshops and tough environment really not a bad choice (and used, old ones, not that expensive anymore)
