Is Dave's "I only give negative feedback" design original?
« on: December 17, 2014, 05:25:37 pm »
I love Dave's tee-shirt design, "I only give negative feedback", but I was under the impression that he was the first to use it via an op-amp. Yet a quick Google shows that there are some others using a very similar design:

Regards,

JMc

What is your point dude? "I only give negative feedback design is not patented. The t-shirt is not just available on these two sites but available everywhere

http://www.spreadshirt.de/i-only-give-negative-feedback-t-shirts-C4408A20819420
http://www.goodsearch.com/24tee/coupons
http://www.couponsmonk.us/coupon/t-shirt/

These sites are selling it for just $16 at discounted price. Unless the design is patented or copyrighted everyone can twist or copy the design.

I was working at Altium at the time, the idea came at the lunch table. I then hand drew the circuit and scanned it in.
Didn't even look to see if anyone else had done it, not that I cared or it mattered.
I'm absolutely sure it's not original, it's just too obvious a play on words.

I'm not a lawyer, but the design is likely already your copyright, and depending on your laws probably implicit and you don't have to "register" anything. It's your own original design, placing the image next to the text in a specific location and manner and font face, size, colour, etc... and that is the copyright you probably already have on it.

If the other t-shirts change it up a little, different font, different line styles, different graphic, then it's probably ok for them to do it.

The text or the schematic cannot be copyrighted in most jurisdictions.

The text can be trademarked as part of your blog, if you wanted to go that far with it. And if you do, you have to make the enforcement effort, or it's not yours anymore.

While on this subject... I'd like to use the phrase and design on a badge hanger ribbon.

What's a badge hanger ribbon? It's a ribbon that you stick to the bottom edge of a convention membership badge, as shown in the "cover photo" here: http://www.pcnametag.com/ The thing that says "speaker" is what I'm talking about. The visible area is an inch high by 4 wide (25 x 100 mm), with the printable area a bit smaller.

In recent years at sf (science fiction) cons there has been a trend for people to get these made with all kinds of amusing sayings, much like you'd have on a T-shirt. It's not uncommon to see people with two, three, or twelve or more of these things in a long chain hung off the badge. Many of the come from the dealers' room - some dealers pass them out for free (as a way to get people to come to their tables); other fans just have them made, wear them, and pass them out when asked about them.

So anyway, I thought your slogan and design (I know, you disclaim it above, but it's associated with you now) would be perfect for declaring myself as a sometime EE and full-time eevblog fan.

Yes, I've ordered a shirt, but one can't wear the same shirt every day.

I've attached a GIF of the workup I did (originally in Visio). Whaddaya think? By the way this is a foil stamping process and there are severe limits on resolution; the smallest line weight they want to see is 1 pt, and 2 pt is recommended (most lines here are 1.5). The colors shown here are probably not final.

I would definitely buy one if it had the IEC resistor symbols.
Maybe just make my own, copypaste.

If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a nonworking cat.

You should get rid of that wonky, loopy, Rg resistor trying to go down when there's no room for it.

do it like this instead:

Sigh, everybody's an art critic :)

Good point, but it's too late now. I'll try that mod if I reorder.
