Apparently, heavier elements such as Copper (atomic number 29) needed the massive heat from large supernovae to be created:

They say most of the elements come from the stars and, consequently, we are all made of star dust...

Use the Teslacoil link to the whole video.

I can watch around half the Smithsonian channel videos, but others are " not viewable in your country, sorry about that", so YMMV.

I put "How It's Made-Copper" into Youtube and the result page doesn't have this video and it has no reference to "Teslacoil".  Neither does this thread other than your mention of it a few seconds ago.   I am still not findit it.  Link?

So how much energy is needed to make 1kg of copper?
And wow, so much scope for environmental damage if things are not done properly.

Wild back of the envelope order-of-magnitude guestimate without looking anything up: 100kWh. That's based on 250eV per copper atom (allowing for the huge inefficiency of the whole process, but perhaps I'm still being conservative).

And wow, so much scope for environmental damage if things are not done properly.
In terms of raw energy cost, aluminium is a lot more damaging AFAIK. Australia is one of the main producers and exporters of Al ore, and all the Aussie Al production is powered by the dirtiest modern fuel, coal. The bulk of our Al ore export is to China and that fares no better (we also export coal to be burnt in China).

Conservative by a few orders of magnitude!  Aluminum doesn't even cost 10eV/atom, and it's electrolytically smelted!

It's a lot more than that for sure. Not talking about just the energetics of the chemistry but the actual energy cost per atom from mining through to you having a piece of aluminium ready to use in your hands.

i am guessing it is under historical conservation?
overclocked CPU and GPU are a waste of energy and time, it is highly energy + calculation inefficient vs watts. there is an entire influencer industry milking users off it, they call it "premium" but lifespans are short, oxymoronic crap , more like single use.

All very interesting, but they seem to have forgotten the last stage: "Critical listening", where "experts" deduce in which direction the electrons flow best?  ::)
