I'm trying Proteus/ISIS inside VMware... seems pretty slow. I know, maybe I'm being Captain Obvious...

If you can let the vm have enough cpus and cores and memory, the extra layer performance hit should be too bad. Maybe you've got a setting that the host is having trouble virtualising.
