"utter nonsense."

I agree. Hell, 30 years ago I didn't even KNOW what a "prank video" was !!  :-DD

If you look at the Youtube stats, I think it's incredibly clear that the vast majority of the entire planet uses Youtube for two things: Music videos and entertainment. We're talking BILLIONS of people. Just look at the top 50 channels. It's all about music videos and entertainment.

Now, if you consider the availability of music videos and entertainment to anyone with a smartphone an important aspect in improving our society, then yeah, Youtube is saving the world.

The entire youtube can go to Hell and i wil not cry.  World was a better place before youtube.

That's a rather nihilistic view. Youtube is what you make of it. It has a lot of garbage in terms of content, sure. But you can actively seek out and subscribe to channels that offer the quality content you like. There is so many good stuff out there, highly educational and creative. Not many platforms offer the same level of variety and amount of content.

Youtube simply is a platform for content, like many others are. And yes, they have to make money to pay the costs for servers, bandwidth and so on. So I don't blame them for coming up with a business model to get that money- after all, most of the viewers are there out of their free will, aren't they?

The real issue is in front of the screen. And, in front of the screen lies a big misconception: In front of the screen sits not the customer, but the real product that gets marketed...
And this product has an unique property amongst other products: It can decice, where to watch ads...

This means: I don't blame youtube for trying to get some money out of those videos. I only would wish that there would be some more transparent ways of supporting people that do very good videos with what they are doing. Yes, I could use paypal or Patreon or whatever stuff is currently in style, but it sometimes can get time-consuming, and micro-ttransactions really cost a good deal of a cut for the transferring agents that do the money transfer, so a significant part of those small payments will not reach the real content creator.

Also the "free" mindset of lots of people is questionable- I use open source stuff lots of years now, and the mindset there is a bit different- there its like "Free as in free beer"- the people know what an amount of work is behind some program or other stuff and honor it- whether with their time of doing other things for that project or for chipping in some donations to keep things going...
But mostly, lots of people stop thinking about the whole picture of a situation as such, when they don't have to pay money upfront. :-(
