Here is my diatribe about my life as a MS Surface user, with a question somewhere in the middle:

I 'ave a 1 year old (still in diapers and has tantrums, dreading the Gates Syndrome or terrible two's!) microsoft surface pro 7+,Windows 11 home  build # 100.22631; I baby this thing, so no eating over it or dropping it. It's the tablet that has the magnetic keyboard so it like a tablet laptop hybrid ipad clone type deal. It's warranty just expired so you can't even get tech support on the phone (you type in your serial number and if the IVR sees you are in warranty you can get a live person, after 1 year it's just a dead end maze of IVR prompts and will literally hang up on you if you try to get a real person).

So I have no way to ask questions, I'm at wits end and know this board is much smarter then I. My whole life I never called tech support because any time the computer was broken at home or even work I was the computer person. "My laptop is broken what do I do? Ask Lexi she will fix it." But I stopped keeping up with computers when my vision was too bad around windows 10 and I just want it to work; I no longer have the patience to fuck about and fix things.

I used to just pull the hard drive out of the broken computer plug it into one of those USB hard drive adapters and fix the issue from another computer, but after buying FOUR and getting three through warranty so SEVEN computers in two and a half years. Yeah I'm kind of stubborn, but want my SDR and arduino stuff to work. The really expensive MS surfaces that were like 2000$ each. The computers stopped recharging even though I would buy new 80$ power supplies, but the computer was glued shut so I had no way to even troubleshoot let alone put a new drive in and fix it. I also realized this new computer is glued shut too, after I bought it. Drives me Bonkers you buy the best computer on the shelf paying top dollar because you want quality to last, and its made to break right after the warranty, and you cant open it with out a hack saw or put it back together without epoxy. END=RANT.

So this is my issue: the camera will work when I turn it on, but it no longer works when I open the computer and it looks at your face and unlocks in 2 seconds. That stopped working months ago, and messing around with it as best I could I couldn't fix it. And now...

MY MAIN ISSUE: the battery would last about 6 hours: just opening youtube in firefox and not running any other apps with wifi turned on, and listening to videos through headphones with a cord, no bluetooth turned on or any other apps running. I have installed maybe four apps on this computer. Even when I shut the keyboard which keeps the computer running but the screen shuts off it doesn't make the battery last any longer. No way in hell is the battery worn out: I always keep it at full charge at home, and do one 100% to 15% power cycle followed by a full charge five days a week. My old gateway "thin and light" (2" thick and five pounds) from when I started med school lasted from 2000 to 2012, never once even had to pull out the HD and wipe it. And that was primitive LiIon (Lion: ROAR!) chemistry without as much rare earth like new liions. Seems to charge at the same rate as new.

I open task manager and it seems the only things using resources are firefox and a windows defender program: msmpeng.exe which doesnt use much cpu but uses the second most memory. Seems like a bad idea to shut it off, because thats the only antivirus, I think? I just keep it updated as the old days of AVG spybot and adaware are unnecessary I guess. Never had a virus on any computer in the last five years just using the windows defender that comes with it. Is that all I need as far as viruses go, along without going to porn websites or those questionable websites that fire fox will block?  I tried to ctrlc ctrlv my task manager but that doesnt work anymore. Is there a way to do that or do I just have to do a ctrl prtscrn? Love forced updates.

Another thing that drives me bonkers is that periodically the touch pad doesn't work. I don't think there is any physical damage because unconnecting the key board or some times clicking the touch pad seems to make it rework, worse case shut off and turn on and it works. Its like it wont work for five seconds then It just starts working. The keyboard always works. I have never spilled or dropped it. Is that software, firm ware,or sexy underware?

I don't get why the computer seems like its wearing out when physically its 100%. Camera works but face recognition doesn't mouse pad doesn't work, and now the battery is fucked up. Is this just the new reality shit made in china by slaves, with a 10,000% mark up and then it's made to break in 13 months?

Leaving it plugged in 24/7 can still kill the battery over time.
Shutting the lid should enter some sort of sleep or hibernation mode which should make it last longer. Go to Power and Sleep settings and look around in there.
Can use a power measurement device to see how much its drawing from the wall (once its fully charged).
