Jameco Electronics offline for 5 days so far.
« on: April 26, 2022, 04:44:36 pm »
Does anyone happen to know what happened to Jameco?  I was placing an order as they happen to be the only place that happens to have two components I can't find elsewhere (a specific potentiometer and LM317HV regulators) and their website went offline.  There's a message saying they have an outage and their website, e-mail and ordering are down.  It's been 5 days.  Short of ransomware, what would put them out of business for that long?

No news is probably bad news, which is unfortunate, IIRC they seemed to carry a lot of NOS stuff you usually have to play the ebay/ali chip lottery for.

A lot of IT failures could put a site down for that long so I don't think it's necessarily ransomware.

I phoned them but they wouldn't say a peep about why/when/how long etc.

Their ebay store states:
"The seller is away until 04 May 2022. Expect a delay in delivery until they return."
But maybe they just decided 2 weeks is enough to deal with the customer/shipping backlog.

Maybe it's a one man operation and he decided to take a holiday.

OK, two weeks and still not up!  A Jameco rep on their Facebook site assured me that they are not quitting.  The website has an improved front page and a few info links, but still no real functionality.  What sort of catastrophe causes this?  AS/400 backup tapes gone bad?  I'm just imagining their entire staff doing an entire physical reinventory for their new system because they completely lost the old one.

Looks like we can can't order now. I'm in IT. I can only imagine the mood at Jameco now.  :-BROKE

Wouldn't be surprised if they got hit by ransomware or other catastrophe and had to build everything back from ground zero.  Surprisingly few organizations do a test to see if it is possible to recover operations from  a major disaster and how long it would take.

Any disaster can be a real test of your backup strategy.  Better to do a dry run when it isn't critical.

They're back, just like that, after 15+ days down.  And my items are even still in the cart!

It would be interesting to know what happened.

Yup, I worked in a DR centre for a while, it's quite amazing how many organisations write a DR plan (with or without our help) and then *never* test it, even though we usually include testing days in the DR contract.

I've seenmore than a handful of disasters where some organisation or other has discovered the hard way that their backup wasn't backing up what they thought it was or it was backing up nothing. Or, worse, it had been faithfully reporting errors that had been ignored because nobody ever checked.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

Sad isn't it. However the usual plan isn't even that good:

1. Do ISO 27001 and 9001 audits.
2. See the requirement for a DR policy.
3. Look at commercial priorities and push the DR design and test behind features.
4. Write this in the risk register.
5. Review the risk and see there isn't capacity to solve it.
6. Wait 2 weeks
7. GOTO 5

Or there really is a plan and it is tested.

And the first step of the procedure is "on the production server...".

We did  manage to work out how to do the same thing from the DR server, but it took longer than would otherwise be necessary.

And something else that is often not tested is what happens if you lose the DR data centre. What does that do to production?
