Title: Japanese User's Manual Translation Job
Post by: CaptnYellowShirt on March 12, 2014, 07:40:26 pm
I have a user's manual for a piece of test equipment that I'd like to have translated. Probably not the entire thing --  maybe not even more than 2 pages (the GPIB command list).

I'd be willing to hire someone to do the job at whatever rate seems fair. PM if you can do it and are interested, or if you could recommend someone. Thanks.

If you have the manual in electronic form, you can try Google Translate. Do a copy-paste of the Japanese text.
The quality of the translation will probably be mediocre, but it may be enough.

Its in image-only Japanese. So I would have to OCR it.

I couldn't find any type of Imagine-to-Japanese OCR programs...

Any tips there?

Basic Technical Japanese (Technical Japanese Series) [Hardcover]

:-)

But seriously, maybe change the topic title so that it's clear you'd like a translation job done.  I was expecting a "look at this wacky manual!" thread.

If nobody with actual competence offers, I could take a look.  Two pages of tech specs in list form might just be at my level.  Could you scan the relevant pages and put it somewhere people on the forum can see it?

That was quick!  It looks relatively straightforward too.

I'm taking a second crack at it with tesseract .... now that I have the Japanese plug-in installed.

But.... post google translate I get stuff like this:

"Internal / external voltage of ulcers over over constant , the selection of the range"

Google can be pretty awful with Japanese.  You'd want something the Japanese use instead (Yahoo Japan?), but then of course you get the chicken-and-egg problem of not being able to read that site..

here is the ocrized version of the two pages, done with the free tool "PDF OCR X"
a copy-paste to google translation gives some ... well... I let you see yourself if you can use it !!
