My real-life situation (that was in Germany):

He: Where are you from?
Me: Poland
He: Poland... Poland... Aaaah! Amsterdam!
Me: :palm:

A German who doesn't know where Poland is? O_o With an expression like "Heute gestohlen, morgen in Polen" you'd think they would know where the hell it is. :P

A German who doesn't know where Poland is?
Maybe this happened in Heidelberg, Neuschwanstein or Ruedesheim :D
There are only few germans around these places  ;D

Mmmh, just thought of something. If you have:

1) Someone saying "Poland" with a Polish accent, and
2) A German in his default mode  (aka expecting people to talk german)

... then "Poland" might sound enough like "Holland", in which case the "aaah Amsterdam" suddenly makes a lot more sense.
Either that, or this was at a festival, in which case beer, in which case all usual logic explanations go out the window. :P

This ;) I just might have forgotten to put my perfect British accent (yeah, sure ;)) on so, as you say, it could probably sound more like "Holland". Plus, the guy was Turkish ;)

A few years ago I was sending a package to Australia, and the guy at the post office refused to sell me the correct stamps. Australia was apparently a part of Europe, even though it was listed clearly as a point on the list on itself :wtf:
