Looks like it was designed by someone who is color-blind.
Yeah, the numeric display in the first photo is fake,
but then most photos of 7-segment displays are faked in marketing photos.

I'm impressed that they actually labeled the thing, and took a photo of it (or did a reasonable photoshop). Others I've seen, the brand is literally pasted in with Paint.

I'm curious who actually makes the things. Does everyone make them? Does the OEM not sell their own brand, so they let everyone and their dog do the marketing and branding?

In any case, there's not a single thing with those shitty metal boxes and oval buttons that I'm ever wasting my money on!

Actually who knows what color these things are. Why would you expect the quality of the photography to exceed the standards elsewhere in the product?

When did yellow replace green as the standard color for chassis/earth ground? Why is the ground terminal between positive and negative? Why is the power button 4 times larger than it needs to be? Why is the handle on top instead of the side? Why do they put so little thought into product design?

It is one of the cheapest adjustable medium power supply, so people will buy it no matter what. Outer size and buttons are very standard, I do not see power switch as too big - it always (>10 years) was like this on this type of PSU.

Also, it is well known fact that the same plastic moulds can be used with any plastic of the same type (but different colour). Some factory simply ran out of the right colour plastic and used leftovers. Non standard colours may be 0.01% cheaper too.

That, or it was a replacement. Seems unlike HP to allow that out of the factory. That said, it's probably tricky to ensure such things in manufacturing... the bench jockey reaches in one bin, pulls out a connector and bolts it in... reaches in another bin, and so on... Likewise during inspection, even if it's an itemized checklist noting all of these... people make mistakes.

Automated insertion or inspection would avoid that, most likely (the worst case being, a whole run of them end up wrong because some jerk dumped the wrong bin in the machine -- same root problem of course!). But such connectors I don't think have that kind of option. There are board mounted kinds, but... yeah.

Nope, that was the way HP used to make them. I have an E3610A that has the red-red-black. I always thought it was one of the dumber things they did. Just goes to prove that no one is immune to poor design. Shortly before they turned into Agilent, they did switch to the red-black-green colors. I've seen HP models both ways, but I don't think I've ever seen an Agilent without the green ground post.

I like (+) (-) (GND) , not GND in the middle.

A lot of chinese supplies seem to have PE GND in the middle like that. It means you can't use a dual banana jack to BNC, which I like sometimes, and with a BNC to grabbers at the other end. They often show pictures that have PE GND strapped to the (-) of the PSU, so I think that's why they do it that way. HP has a few older PSUs with PE GND in the middle too, so they are guilty as well. There is no standard, although many people have a preference, one way or another.

I much prefer the older triangle arrangement, with PE GND above and centered between the (+) (-) , or at least at a right angle, with (+) (-) side by side at 3/4" spacing, and the PE GND above or below the (-) jack, again at 3/4" spacing.

Agilent's current models seem to have it in a good arrangement and with proper spacing.
