K type thermocouple module for DMMs.
« on: January 20, 2012, 12:02:10 pm »
Is there any K type thermocouple module for DMMs available? Something like Dave's uCurrent.

Something build around AD595 maybe?

Not sure if anyone has done a DIY circuit, but there are ready-made products available that aren't horribly expensive.

For example, the TPI A-312 can be found for $45USD (usually a bit over $60), and it does a bit more than a standard DMM's temp function (comes with 2x K type thermocouples, and can give independent values or even the differential between the two). http://www.testextra.com/tpi/pages/tpi_a312_dual_input_dmm_temperature_adapter.htm

Just make sure your DMM has the input impedance and range needed for such a unit if you get one.

Hope this helps.

I was after the Fluke product but ended up buying some different models from Metrix and MAC Tools. They work just as well. The MAC unit is available under different names but the same case.

ebay regularly have them for sale. Just search for 'thermocouple module' or 'thermocouple adapter'

Here is one :

Pictures of my units attached. Mine cost less than GBP20 each on ebay and were new condition.

From memory the Fluke looks like my MAC unit inside ! Just different cases. The schematic is a real bonus...thanks.

They're definitely out there, and some will work with other types of thermocouples as well (I've seen some that also accept J types). Never seen one for N or T types, but it's possible.
