Keep the EEVblog intro?
« on: November 12, 2010, 09:47:20 pm »
I've been contemplating ditching the 10sec video intro, what do people think?
Does it add any value to the show?
I'm thinking it's maybe ok for newbies, but it probably just annoys the regulars?
Should I just jump right into the blog?

Comments please.

Dave.

It's not a bad intro. Maybe you could update it with a different 3D PCB each time.

Maybe shorten it to be a better balance between annoying and informing newbies. I don't think the "I'm your host... bit" adds much

Voted to keep an intro, but change the one you have.  The spinning PCB obviously spun by a mouse movement while captured is cheezy.

I support short intro: it helps to orient into what you're getting and also does double duty as a sound check. (No need to think if he's just quiet or are my speakers muted)

The intro doesn't bother me. It would be cool to see some different boards from time to time.

It's short and reasonable. I've never thought about it and don't think most people already familiar with you would care either way.

You should probably keep it because it makes your videos seem more professionally produced while advertising the blog to someone that randomly stumbles on one.

Sound check point is a good one too.

Slight interesting variations would be amusing but ultimately probably not worth your time. Different PCBs might be cool. =)

The EEVBlog intro is nowhere near annoying, there are some pretty bad ones out there.

I think the blog is quite popular now and after a certain number of episodes the show doesn't need an intro. The fans already have a good idea what the show involves and don't need a persistant reminder. Having said that some form of intro frames the video and makes it more professional and less amateurish. I think the shorter the better and if people want to see different CAD models why not have a thread or a slot occasionally dedicated to them on the show. It is always worth stating your name either at the beginning or end. Could go something like this:

"Hi, I'm Dave Jones and welcome to the* EEVblog - A blog for anyone interested in electronics and electrical engineering"

I'd keep the intro and and exit segments. They're like the covers on a book. Sure, -WE- all know who you are and what you're about, but you have to produce each piece such that someone who's never seen or heard of you before will "get it".

Actually, the only thing that annoys me is the music under the exit segment, and I don't know why. I just don't like it, and that's certainly nothing more than my opinion.
I'm either at my bench, here, or on PokerStars.

Keep it. It's part of your brand/trademark (right word? I am not shure about the translation..) and it underlines the concept of your video blog.

I voted to keep it. It's short, to the point and I think it bears repeating and it doesn't bother me in the least, even though I've seen and heard it.... uhm... well.... I've lost count how many times as I've re-watched some of your videos.

Christian

I do not like the intro, but it just became your (kind of) trademark, so...
keep it!  ;)

The intro is like your trademark. I like it and I think you should keep it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t change it time to time (e.g. once per year). Renewing the image is always a good thing.

I think is a nice intro! I really get used to it, but as migsantiago said, maybe you can change the PCB design sometimes!

It's like a tv series with the same beginning for every episode in the season, it's like a way to id your show. I like that you have it, maybe you can update to something new every 100 episodes...

I'd keep the intro. Yes, it's very familiar, but then again it's like a trademark.

The PCB design could be changed from time to time. Or there could be special occasions with a special intro. But not too often.  :)

Yes, keep it. It's an excellent sound check. I also echo the others suggestions to change the pcb design occasionally, I hope it's not too difficult to use exactly the same soundtrack each time.

How about shortening it just a tad by having something like.. 'Welcome to the EEVblog, I'm Dave Jones'?

Another vote for keep it, it'd be nice if the PCB changed now and then but that's probably a fair bit of work, so it's fine if it doesn't. \

I've watched a lot of the videos recently (only discovered them a fortnight ago) and to be honest, I just tune it out. I suspect that's the case for most people who've seen a lot of videos. For the odd person who happens to stumble across your blog by way of chain video watching on Youtube (like me) it's a great intro as to what it's all about.

I say keep it.  It adds a touch of class that most blogs don't have.  Then again, your blogs are just generally classier than what else is out there.

Keep it, why change? It's like when you watch a TV series and they change the intro and it's just not the same :P I guess you get used to it after a while lol.

More importantly I want to know if you took any time to perfectly lined up the OUTATIME numberplate for the camera shot? I only noticed in the last one but looking back over a couple it's there perfectly in the top corner :P
