Konica Minolta Magicolor 5430 DL
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:12:19 pm »
I've just been given the pleasure of becoming the proud owner of a Konica Minolta "Magicolor 5430 DL" colour laser printer, WORKING, but just with minor streaking on colour prints. The company said "it has no value"...

Black toner: 54%

Cyan toner: 100%

Magenta toner: 100%

Yellow toner: 100%

What a score! :D

Now... what do I do with it?

[EDITED]: I posted the wrong product image >_<

See how many different pieces it's made of.

LOTS! I've taken apart laser printers when I was younger and also copiers - LOTS indeed! Such high quality engineering; I'm torn between stripping it for parts, which would be wasteful if it works well (but VERY boring to a geek), or just taking it apart like Dave did with his dumpster score copier.

The reward for stripping it down would be a whole ton of parts I'd barely use, if at all, and the novelty of having done so would soon wear off... and then I'd have a whole heap of mess and bits to clear up... hmmm...

I would sell it.  In 2004, my company was talked into supplying a small number of Lexmark C720 laser printers.  It didn't take too long to discover that the cost of toner was ridiculously expensive, not forgetting the OPC belts, waste toner bottles and so on.  As far as the streaking-could be anything from bad transfer/charge rollers (if there are such things in it) to a bad OPC belt (again if it exists).  Aftermarket toner cartridges have to be chipped so the printer recognizes the cartridge and then there is the variability of quality.  Or do as Dave-don't turn it on, take it apart.

Well I tell you something funny folks - I've never owned a colour laser in my life, but you couldn't make this up:

I just went outside to put something in the recycling bin, and I spotted a GIANT soggy cardboard box - we'd used it to keep an old Hoover in for YEARS... well look at that - "Konica Minolta"... *unfolds soggy box*...

Are you sure you didn't buy this printer, sell it to your employer, then get it back from them when they obsoleted it?

Perfectly sure - I don't have an employer, and I've never touched a colour laser printer in my life :D

If you could see the sheer volume of cardboard boxes we have in our house, you'd know that the odds were slightly higher than the average man, that I'd have this box... but not that high... WOW.

I, too, have a burgeoning cardboard collection.  But most of my boxes are Amazon, USPS, generic, or Rigol branded.

Amazon; yep, tell me about it. However, I've made a firm, calm decision never to deal with that company again, for various reasons, the largest of which was the "customer service" that they offer by chat - I've had better resolutions talking to a donkey.

Anyhow, back to my topic which I don't wish to self-derail:  does anyone have an idea what could cause the streaky colours? :)

Separate colour cartridges in a carousel IIRC on these, and the most common reason for streking is a worn scraper blade on the drum. What colour are the streaks, I am going to guess they are black, and nothing on the other colours. Another is if there is toner spilt onto the paper path and the fuser, and this is being picked up. You should try printing a few pages of each colour using about a 50% fill, and see if that picks up the loose toner.

We had an older relative of that copier, and the consumables were pretty expensive, though they were cheaper than the Tek Phasor wax blocks. Those were $100 for 3, and the maintenance tray was $200 for a tray that did 1500 prints, though I was able to do a mod that got easily 6000 plus prints out of them without any issues. The printer would use 1 block of each colour on startup or over a week irrespective of the number of prints.
