Title: Large Hadron Collider May Have Produced New Matter
Post by: Sionyn on November 27, 2012, 11:26:05 pm
The Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator and the 'Big Bang machine' that was used to discover what appears to be the long-sought Higgs boson particle (as announced July 4), may have another surprise up its sleeve this year: The LHC looks to have produced a new type of matter, according to a new analysis of particle collision data by scientists at MIT and Rice University. The new type of matter, which has yet to be verified, is theorized to be one of two possible forms: Either 'color-glass condensate' — a flattened nucleus transformed into a 'wall' of gluons, which are smaller binding subatomic particles, or it could be 'quark-gluon plasma,' a dense, soup or liquid-like collection of individual particles.

Yeah, but will it give us hoverboards by 2015?

Dave.

Dave.

Hover boards and flying cars don't forget flying cars.

No.

However, it will either result in a cure for cancer or the sudden onset of universal heat death. Or not.

Of course it will. It is the _Large_ Hadron Collider, for pete's sake.

Here is the original paper:

The funny thing with this high energy particle research papers is, that the list of authors is the biggest part of them (here it starts at page 13 of a 27 page paper). One day this will result in a mass brawl if those guys can't agree who is to receive the Nobel prize.

I just hope that with all this sub-atomic wrangling and interdimensional fireworks that we're not waking up the Wraith motherships and alerting them to our location!  :-DD

That's when they start the next experiment, searching for the elusive Mayan particle.

Dave.

I dunno, stuff like this shouldn't be run by a large world wide cumunal group that makes all their discoveries open... I think its high time that a trusted government department such as the CIA take over the operation  O0

Noooo... you can't trust the CIA!

Let's get the MPAA and RIAA involved!  :-DD
