Learning RF - Online Class Recommendations
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:52:26 pm »
I've been working as an Electronics Engineer for several years now, but RF design is not something I've been exposed to much. I do have an interest in it from an hobbyist perspective; perhaps could lead to more... Are there any fundamentals online courses you would recommend? I know that several universities post complete lectures theses days and was looking for recommendations from the users in this forum. A mix of theoretical and practical would be great. I have time to learn this since it's not my primary job:) I understand it can take years to get half decent at it.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Have a look at any amateur radio course or textbook, skipping the basic electronics that you already know.  Concentrate on the chapters on receivers, transmitters and antennas.

'Experimental Methods for RF design' is an excellent book to buy and is practically oriented.

Definitely get your amateur radio licence.

Search for 'homebrew QRP' for a choice of hundreds of simple transmitters and receivers to build.

Comprehensive websites that are effectively online courses include those maintained by VK2TIP and Talking Electronics.

Thanks for your recommendations vk3yedotcom! I will look into those books/sites for sure.
I'm also looking for video classes online since there is so much content on youtube these days and it's a powerful way of learning (I took a power electronics course that way)... If anyone can recommend one for RF, I would appreciate it.

Paulo - check out this series from the Australian Radio & Electronics School, starting with Part 1

Some of the homebrew equipment and antenna descriptions on my channel could also be useful.

RF has always been some sort of black magic for me. But I know a place where you can find a lot of information:

http://www.rfcafe.com/

In fact, some might say too much information....
My site www.wisewarthog.com and my Youtube channel (in progress). Links and reviews of books and free stuff.
