LED Lights jam VHF and AIS radio
« on: April 26, 2015, 08:53:29 am »
Apparently, some LED lights sold for maritime usage have this "small" defect.
Me thinks they need to hire a proper EE with some test equipment.

Article in French, sorry, trying to find a similar source on the other side of the pond.

In class, we sweep our circuits with a simple antenna and radio to find this kind of obvious stuff.
How ham fisted does one have to be to actually push this all the way to actual sales!

I had the same problem listening to band II FM broadcasts when I first retrofitted LED downlighters on halogen MR16 about three years ago. The broadband noise from some of some of these LED lights is really not good. Pretty sure they'd never pass the relevant EMC tests as a result.

The range is not far, but it will affect devices within a few meters, raising the noise floor to unacceptable levels essentially blocking reception.

It's a wonder they are on sale.
What is annoying on land is life threatening at sea.
