Ah! Happy memories. When I joined the industry relay switched logic was the norm and I spend many an hour in an equipment room debugging an obscure logic fault or cleaning burnt contacts. By the time I left the control circuit for an elevator was on a single PCB and programmed using a laptop. All the switching is solid state now and apart from the sound of the motor(s) there was nothing to listen to.

The best elevator engineers can debug timing problems by ear  :)
Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.
