| Line/choke filter replacement |

I picked up a used model 3 Sega Genesis(Mega Drive to those not in the US) that was not functioning and found some rust and corrosion. Long story short I cleaned up and repaired some traces and bad solder joints but one component was ruined. It was in line with the power adapter input so I believe it is a line or choke filter. It is labeled "RC 04 T" and I have found a visually matching component referred to as a "CM04RC04" common mode choke filter. As it stands now the Genesis unit will function with this component removed and jumpers put in its place. The component in question is not made any more so it won't be directly replaceable. I would rather have something in its place to take up the same function so if anybody could point me to something closely compatible I would greatly appreciate it. |

Snap a ferrite core on the power cord as close to the unit as possible. |

Of course if it's not gonna be possible then I'll live with it as it is. |

All its there for is to keep the FCC off Sega's back by suppressing some of the noise that could be radiated via the power cord so it meets the limits of a FCC Class B digital device. Replacing it with a footprint-compatible part not specified as an exact equivalent, may give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but does nothing for the FCC without emissions testing. However, if the replacement part has an adequate current rating, is intended for a similar application, you already have it, and the board is in good enough condition to withstand the rework, you might as well fit it, as it *MAY* help with EMC. |

I just wasn't sure whether it was really necessary or not. |
