After mikes awesome drill battery hack youtube recommend this

i don't see how the charge of a lithium battery would effect how or if it reacts to oxygen. i guessing the piecing of the battery regulated the reaction before he opened it further ?

i am guessing the perl colours on the battery electrodes are from  the lithium oxidization ?
