Title: Looking for old test equipment
Post by: ZayneTech on January 30, 2019, 05:32:33 am
Hi all. I'm a 10 year old student, who is into electronics and I was wondering if anybody would like to send me any old test equipment they had. I would really appreciate it as sadly, I still can't purchase things online. I don't mind about broken things, I will repair them, but thanks for any replies

A few questions:
What city are you in?
What if any test gear do you already have?
Do you have a stable, secure space to keep and use test gear? No sense giving you stuff, if it's going to get trashed somehow.
How do your parents feel about you asking for and being given stuff by strangers?

Asking, because I wish someone had given me some test gear when I was ten.

His profile says Melbourne.

Have you thought about getting your Amateur Radio Licence? A lot of radio clubs (there are lots around Melb) would be happy to give a young enthusiast some equipment.

I remember being in a similar situation when I was your age, but was extremely lucky as my dad collected a lot of vintage test gear.

Amateur radio hamfests are also quite good, where you can pick up some usable gear for less than $20. A lot of it is older though, but can be worked on/repaired.

If you're particularly interested, I might have an audio oscillator or CRO you could have, but both are quite old.

You should go ask over in the TEA topic   :-DMM

I'm not in Oz and unfortunately I don't have a lot of extra gear just yet (give it a couple years  :-DD ), but definitely see about getting involved in amateur radio. Hamfests are GREAT for picking up usable gear, often for prices a kid can afford. Besides, the average age of people involved in amateur radio is pretty high, they are most often very excited to see a kid interested in the hobby and will bend over backwards to help them.

The TEA thread residents may also be able to help you out as timelessbeing pointed out.

Come over to the TEA thread linked above and I'm sure some folks will be more than happy to help you out and send you things if that's OK with your parents.

He said no. He doesnt want me hanging with people more than twice my age.

Be like a lawyer, do exactly what isn't forbidden by the wording: There are hams between 10 and 19.9 years old out there. Get in contact with those.

What sort of gear are you looking for and what are your interests in electronics? So Arduino/Micros, IOT, things that go bang?

So
20MHz oscilloscope of your own?
Signal Generator?
Extra Multimeter?
Random stuff to tear down and salvage?

There is a few surplus places around Melbourne that might be worth making contact with and might save you something they are throwing out even if it is un repairable you can learn plenty salvaging gear from it for other projects?

Hello. I am wondering if I should buy a RIGOL DS1054Z. My friend reccomended it to me.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I just picked the RIGOL DS1054z up today and it's great!

I only have a cheap multimeter. My dad got it for me. Its an ANENG AN8008. My parents don’t really mind about asking on the forum because I get very little pocket money and have a big interest in this subject. I have a decent amount of space. And my dad who shares uses my account got a Rigol DS1054Z for work, so i can’t use it. I do have a Hakko FX-888, in my mini lab-desk space. But sadly, that is all i’ve got. Thanks for your time everybody and any replies would be appreciated.

Your dad and you have identical writing styles. Just saying. I don't know why he wouldn't make his own account on eevblog.
Since he's apparently into electronics too, you should go to hamfests together.

Im into mostly building things that can go up in a bang, but i occasionally build IOT Devices

It's only been 2 hrs.

Have some patience, kid. It's Saturday and people want to get away from the computer.

It's called cross or double posting and considered not good forum etiquette. You have a specific thread here already. In reality this thread would be more appropriate in the Buy Sell section.

The gear you already have is as much as I had until I got to secondary school and I didn't buy a Scope of my own until I was 40+, it was a nusence at times but not the end of electronics or even close.  My next item was a power supply I was given by my Uncle at age 12 I think. So one or two power supplies would be a good thing to knock together.

These days a cheap option is an old PC power supply $0 which gets you 3.3, 5 and +-12V and for under $10 add a little 3A Switchmode adjustable box. It's a good project and I still use both items in the photo from time to time even though I have plenty of other choices. With everything including the leads under $15 for the lot. Just be careful you discharge the capacitors inside if you are playing with mains supplies and have it unplugged ALWAYS :)  You have a 3D printer in the family so make it a nice case even.

Depending on what money you or your Dad may be able to come up with this seller in Sydney has some good basic scopes on offer at present. I brought one from him a while back and it arrived well packed and works as described. https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/davidp8764/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2654 (https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/davidp8764/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2654)
