Or both?

SO i don't deny the controller is running hot it defiantly is but there airflow figure seams to be off by quite bit.

A reply from them.

The controller is running hot. You need to check to make sure there is ample air flow across the controller (300CFM).
10/27/15 15:49:22: Measured chip temperature at Channel 0 is 109

Its running in a server chassis with 3 of these http://www.nidecamerica.com/fanpdfs/v80e_a5.pdf
73cfm each  ones

Just as a sanity check there number is way off right? Or do i not understand something about cfm?

This is not the first time one of there cards has had thermal issues on there 3ware 9750 cards someone though it was a good idea to stick a lithium battery above the ram and blocking the bath of air over the cpu i am sure you all know what happens when a lithium battery gets hit with heat 2-3months was the avg lifespan.

Raid adapters can run hot. You say your case has 3*73 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fans. That is 219CFM. Less than their recommended 300.

In addition, those 219 would be for the whole case and cooling everything.

I had a similar issue with an Adaptec 6805.

My solution was something like this

Thats not the actual one I used, but the idea is to force additional air over the heatsink.

Much of that stuff was designed to run in full server chassis with an army of 10,000RPM fans.

On my IBM M1015s I replace the stock low profile heat-sink with one that has the same foot print, but 4x taller.  Matching the mounting holes is not required, just use heat-sink glue.

As Dr. D. An army of fans, running at full speed in a line the width of the case would be common enough in highend rack servers.
Not something you want to listen to. .

Yeah in this case it acceley is in a 2u server chasse that basicly has one fan dedicated to the card.

And it is in a datacenter that run the cold isiles at 70-68F

I just find it kinda pathetic that they undersized the heatsync that much on what is a $500+ cards.

This really sucks if the thermal issues are that bad we have a few hundred servers with this cards at this point.:(
