LTSpice won't start...
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:12:59 pm »
A few weeks ago LTSpice started acting weird, simulations would run, give sensible results and then on a second 'probing', the results would be 'weird', a part of my circuit is a resistor divider fed with a DC voltage that should have yielded 1.25V but the probe result would drop to 0.89999323232v or something similar.

I gave up because I had the data I needed.

Tonight, I find i've some free time so I tried to start LTSpice and it doesn't run.

No errors, nothing in the system logs, no frozen process, nothing.

I've tried running as admin, uninstalled, cleaned out the relevant bits of the registry, deleted folders, downloaded and reinstalled, registered DLLs, all sorts and it just doesn't work, same again, no errors, no messages, no system events.

I'm not really willing to rebuld my system for hwat should be a simple fix but I'm damned if I can work it out.

Any ideas?

Windows 7, up to date with patches and service packs, Lenovo Thinkpad i5 8GB hybrid hard drive.

All I can think of is to find the exe and create a new shortcut to it, it's called scad exe or similar, and while there right click the exe and check that everyone/anyone can run it.
.  That took much longer than I thought it would.

I've managed to spend a little time this lunchtime experimenting, it's related to my user profile, creating a new profile on the laptop and installing LTSpice, it runs.

So, I need to work out what and where LTSpice writes to a user profile.

Interestingly, I've got the same problem, but I put it down to the fact I'm using Wine. LTSpice wouldn't run from the desktop, so I loaded XVIIx64.exe from the terminal and got the following error:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000008 at address 0x7f7ba185d879 (thread 0030), starting debugger...
winedbg: Internal crash at 0x7f46eb5ad879

Fortunately the 32-bit version XVIIx86.exe still works, so I'm using that for now.

Any update on this?

I'm having the same problem. Created a new profile, and it runs fine under that profile. I can't find any logs at the application level or the OS level at all, so troubleshooting is difficult. It just never attempts to load from the looks of it. Occasionally the cursor will change to the hourglass for just a fraction of a second when I launch it, but most times I don't even get that.

When I have some time later I may pull in an old SysInternals tool that monitors activity, relearn how to use it (because it's been a long time), and see if I get a hint.

At this point, I've only attempted to pull the the LTSpice folder (the one in the Documents directory) from the working profile to my own. That didn't help. Tried the 32 and 64 bit versions as well. No help.

There is a very good LTSpice group on Yahoo.  Some VERY talented people hang out there.

Does it work now? What LTSpice version/OS are you using?

In my case, the WINE issue was fixed on the next update and it works perfectly now.

I upgraded to wine 3.0 this week and Ltspice x64 works better than ever.
