Many local redundant TV aerials/masts here!!
(1/1)
GlennSprigg:
I'm now living in Bunbury, Western-Australia, about 2 hours drive South of Perth.
I've noticed literally HUNDREDS of homes in this town, that still have old TV masts, probably about 50-feet above their
houses, from back in the days of old/original analog TV/Radio transmission locations, that were difficult to pick up!! :(
NOW, it's all irrelevant, (even for the 'later' early analog signals. Not to mention that it is ALL Digital now, & new transmission points.
All that's needed now, are the standard/new TV aerials/dishes mounted directly onto the roof of the houses, however, there is a
plethora of these totally redundant aerials/masts, littering the whole towns rooftops!! Here's a photo of one...
You can't see the 'Guy-Wires' there, and some are poles, and others are small 'criss-crossed' tower frames.
I "got to thinking", (haha...), that I'm sure a lot of existing or new up-and-coming Radio enthusiasts could benefit from them!! 8)
If I was a lot younger I would offer to pull some down, and flog them off to the needy!!! :phew:
P.S. (Edit)
I don't understand it fully, but most of the OLD stuff was 'Horizontally-Polarized' of something!! ;D
Lord of nothing:
;D well with an DVB-T Dongle or nower says SDR called that "old" Antenna maybe usefull to see what the local community are doing.

Yeah, here in the UK mainly low power repeaters are vertically polarised, almost all the 'main' high power transmitters are horizontal:

We were pondering the other day what birds will do when the last UHF aerial is removed? Being the highest point, not only are they effective vantage points but, many birds use them to broadcast their calls and songs from. Aerials become the boundary markers for bird territories. As well as frames for some nests. Also with fossil fuels destined for the history books, chimneys will disappear too. By 2060 the urban skyscape may be somewhat different to our avian partners.
