YouTube gone down the tube ?
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:42:33 pm »
Every time I try to view a YouTube video lately I have to give up because it stutters so much. So does every one have this problem ? I'm finding it unusable.

Everything fine here!
I use it on a few different devices and it seems to be fine as usual.

Some days it's frustrating for me too to watch a long video (specially HD ones). I guess that it has to do something with my ISP (bandwidth saving e.t.c.). I don't believe it is a Youtube issue.

I usually use Download Helper for downloading the video for off line browsing.

I get  that issue some times as well, but mainly when I'm downloading something and watching on my iPad, but I still get the occasional stop on my pc. Other then that it usually goes good for me.

YouTube changed their download algorithm a little while ago. Previously they would download and buffer the whole video so you could pause the video, wait for it to download, and then watch it stutter free. Now they only download just a little ahead of the current point and they stop downloading until the player gets there. They also stop downloading if you pause the video. The result is a much worse viewing experience.

Lately I hate YouTube. It just sucks.

I haven't noticed any problems watching the videos but I do have a 17Mb line  :)

Hit and miss for me. It was pretty bad when they changed their algorithm, but the situation has improved somewhat.

Mostly I use flashgot and watch later, as most of the time I am bandwidth limited.

I've not seen this. Even now I can pause a video and it will still buffer the whole video.

Can you post the URL of where you read this please?

I have had stuttering over the last few days mostly when viewing through links on the blog here so I assumed that it was something to do with that , If it is a UK thing could it be something to do with allocating more band width and cables to the TV company's for the upcoming Olympics.

It looks like it's an HTML5 thing:

It is consistent with my experience using Chrome.

I'm still using flash player, sometimes videos are buffering as they always were, but sometimes it just stops or slows down, even with +20 Mbps connection at work. Not so long ago I just opened EEVBlog's videos, enabled 720p resolution and watched as they were loading, now it's just annoying.

No probs in Oz.
They have local CDN's here in Oz, and probably do in the UK too I'm guessing?
I do know that the Youtube severs give priority to video playback over everything else (like uploads, processing, comments, stats etc etc) s should work barring a Skynet takeover.
I did a video on slow Youtube with Telstra. Turns out Telstra (my ISP) was accidentally routing to an overseas server instead of the local Oz CDN which killed the bandwidth for everyone.

Right click on a video and select "Take speed test".

It shows a 30 day graph of your speed vs others in your location vs city vs global etc..
Quite useful to see issues.

I only get 4.49 Mbps from YouTube. No problem here with HD. I simply hit play and then pause and wait for it to load while I'm doing something else. I had to change a setting in the Account settings >  playback page. I don't remember what the default is but I have it set to "Always choose the best quality for my connection and player size" and "Always play HD on fullscreen (when available)" is not checked. IIRC, the default prevents the HD videos from caching much data.

I used to pause youtube videos and read something else while it downloads.  But they stopped doing this, as has been noted here already, youtube will pause downloading when you hit pause on the player.

If your youtube video stops downloading when you pause it, here's a workaround: just change to a higher or a lower resolution and then back to your desired resolution.  This seems to make it start loading for me again, then I pause the video and let it fully download.

Then I get no more stuttering.
