In reality, for many simple repairs where you are just re-capping a board that isn't too dense with components - wouldn't the "technique" of just yanking the electrolytic caps off with pliers work fine? They are a pain in the ass to remove intact, causing lots of extra board heating as you try to reflow both leads at the same time while pulling the cap. It seems that there would be far less stress on the board by physically yanking the cap off and then quickly desoldering each lead individually. I mean - the caps are bad and being replaced anyways.
I get it that he was going for comedic effect.
