How to place a photo in a post
« on: October 20, 2016, 08:33:33 pm »
It may a stupid question, but I have tried many things, no success.
I like to place a photo in a post, thought "insert image" may the way, but could not make it.
I remember, I have read how to do in another other post, but that time just read and can't remember in detail how.
I have used the "search" but couldn't find it.
Any tip?
You will learn something new every single day

When you build a post at the bottom of the page is Attachments, click that and select the pic location in your PC, pen drive, network, etc.
It's a good idea to use an image management program to compress the size of the pic first to save space on Dave's server.
If good detail is needed set pic file size to a few hundred Kb.

It'll appear as a thumbnail at the bottom of your post with it's own URL, so to insert it within your text you need to copy the URL and paste it there with an edit or Modify, highlight it and click the "Insert Image" which will have the "img" command placed either side of your uploaded image URL.

Quote a post or two that have heaps of imagery and study the syntax.  ;)

An image has to be 'hosted' somewhere in order for it to be displayed on the internet.

There are two ways of doing that here.

The first is to upload to a photo sharing service like Photobucket and then copy the [IMG] tag that is provided and paste it into your post.  The following image was done that way:

The other way is to upload it to Dave's server using the "Attachments and other options" that you will find immediately below the text box you type your posts into.  This will give the thumbnail you see at the bottom of your post once you have posted it - like this:

Number one reason you cannot insert image is it is too big.   You need to resize it to a smaller size or learn to take smaller size pictures (few people know how)

Once you have uploaded to Dave's server, you click on the thumbnail and it will expand to the full image.  You can then get the URL of this (larger) image as follows:

and you can then paste this into the [IMG] tag generated from the 'Insert Image' button.

To show the larger image in the post using this method, you simply add the image, post your post, click on the generated thumbnail, get the URL (Copy Image Address) and then add the IMG code as you would any other image.  Yes - it's a two-step process.

Size restrictions only apply to EEVblog hosted images.

This one is over 2MB and there are no problems (except, perhaps a bit longer to load)

Several points:
People suggest to compress images. Incorrect terminology, all common image file formats like JPG and PNG are already compressed to near maximum possible data compression. What you need to do is scale the image to a lower pixel XY size, resulting in smaller file size.
A good freeware tool for image manipulation is Irfanview, from http://www.irfanview.com/
Portable Apps version here: http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/irfanview_portable
To change image size in Irfanview, use menu Image --> Resize/resample  --> Set new size (and tick 'preserve aspect ratio')
Then File --> SaveAs and select format (JPG 85% typically, or PNG if you want non-lossy)
For pictures to upload to eevblog I usually set the size to 1000h x (whatever), resulting in filesize less than 200KB.

Regarding whether to use external image fileshare servers, or eevblog upload, the latter is highly preferable because it creates a lasting association between the image and the thread where you posted it. External fileshares can go down or change their URL structure, then the thread has a missing image. But if it's on eevblog server the thread's images will be preserved as long as the thread.

Also, some image servers end up on blacklists, whether local or net-global. For instance in adding some URLs to my usual browser's block lists, I seem to have killed some that people use for images, so those pics don't show up in eevblog for me. I still haven't figured out which entries caused that. This is just one small, laughable example of typical problems with external image servers.

For adding multiple eevblog-served images as full size embeds in a thread... it's not a great idea unless you _really_ want to show off the pics. Since it means the eevblog server expend that bandwidth (operating cost) every time someone fetches that page. Even if they would not have bothered expanding those image thumbnails. So, use sparingly.
But if you must... the easiest way is to type in the text, select the pics to upload as attachments, and send. Then open another browser window to the same post, and click Modify on your post. With the first window, click all the pic attachments so they are full-sized. Now you can right-click on the images in that window to get the URLs for the full-size images, then past the URLs into their places in the text open for editing in the other window. Select each URL and click the 'image' icon (bottom left one in the eevblog post editing tools) to wrap it in the correct codes.

I posted the large pic purely to show the limitation mentioned does not apply - technically....

BUT...

Size restrictions only apply to EEVblog hosted images.

This is very true - and something ALL posters should be aware of.

Not to mention the larger file size on Dave's server.
Again - only applicable for images inserted using the "Attachments and other options" feature.  Externally hosted images take ZERO space on Dave's server.

Unless details is needed compress pictures.
This is a very good general guideline.  If someone doesn't know how to, there are any number of image processing programs that can do this.

The simplest is to reduce the height and width pixel count.

A good freeware tool for image manipulation is Irfanview, from http://www.irfanview.com/

Irfanview is a brilliant program, IMHO.

The 32 bit version has the RIOT plugin (couldn't find that for the 64 bit version) which allows you to actually specify an output file size.  It has a lot more features as well - image resize (pixel count) being just one.

I would recommend anyone working with images to have it on hand.

Best and easiest way is with imgur.com

1) Copy your image to the clipboard (CTRL-C)
2) Goto imgur.com and press CTRL-V to upload it
3) Hover over the image and click the down arrow and click on Get Share Links

4) Copy the BBcode
5) CTRL-V the code into your forum post

The resize utility I use is 'Resize' by Peter Bone. It's a simple non-installing standalone program (it generates a Resize setting.ini in the same folder but that's all) that just resizes, no other complication. It will do drag and drop and batch resizing and doesn't replace the original file. I haven't tried it on the latest windows versions but would be interested to know if it still works on Win10.

I've attached a zip (program + readme) for those that trust me. Otherwise you can still find it in various repositories.

I use the Brice Lamson Image Resizer for Windows. It most definitely still works in Win 10. Plugs right into the Explorer menu, right click on an image file and there is a Resize Image option in the menu. It gives you 3 common sizes plus a custom option to make it any size you want, as well as an option to just overwrite the existing image should you want to.
This one's been around at least since XP
