Mikrotik hAC RB962 experience
« on: January 23, 2018, 02:34:26 pm »
Hello!

I'm looking for a SOHO wifi router and I've found this Mikrotik hAC RB962UIGS model. It runs RouterOS and it seems to be quite powerful but also hard to configure.
Does anybody have any experience with this router?

Thanks in advance!

I have no experience with this particular model, but I'm using the wAP ac for over a year now. Runs without problems and is quite fast (note that Mikrotik actually gives you throughout results). It takes a while to get it set up (at least when you don't want to run in in a total standard configuration) since it gives you much more tools to configure instead of being wizard-driven. But OTOH it allows to configure you network the way you want.
Mikrotik was actually a recommendation from people I trust to know what they are doing, and so far I was not disappointed. Powering via PoE was a nice plus (since the place where it stays has no power outlet, just Ethernet).

I installed one of those at home July last year. Excellent device.  :-+
You are correct configuring them is a challange, they are so called prosumer devices. But learning a bit of networking can't be a bad thing in today's society.

Due to the young age of Mikrotik, expect some bugs. Although I don't expect the bugs to be a problem with the simple situations you have at home. They also occasionally change how RouterOS works in a fundamental level, often to improve throughput. Some configurations will require maintenance in these occasions. (or you set the update channel to bugfix only)

For easier devices you can try Ubiquiti.
