Missile guidance for dummies with an IQ of over 240
« on: April 05, 2012, 07:01:34 pm »
Now that's a REAL trap for young players  >:(

Here is another upload of the same video with some hilarious youtube comments:

How do you react to this?

I'm actually quite convinced that this was a 1950's CIA plot to confuse the ruskies about how our missile guydance works...

I worked in guided missile maintenance in the 70's this text was in around then but in paper form as part of our training package.  I saw it as part of a USN tech order but that may have been a mock up just to add to the joke.

It's not really that complicated.

The guy in NZ is still going strong have a look here http://www.interestingprojects.com/cruisemissile/missilemanbook.shtml

It would appear that missiles are just lying around waiting to be found.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17553150

This one was in Harwich harbour Been there since WW2. The locals have been tying their boats to it, someone mentioned it at the local harbour commission's meeting and the bomb squad gets called in and the whole place sealed off.

I'm going to propose this as a steering algorithm for autonomous car we're starting to build at my university at the next meeting. :>

He just said he could build one for less than I think about $5000 dollars. Caused a bit of hoorah. And do you know that Bruce Simpson is a member of this forum. Seriously he is.  ;D

Edit: Didn't know he actually built one. Maybe he can enlighten us a bit more if he reads this.

It's be funnier if it didn't sounds pretty much (to my ears) like the online cryptography class I'm trying to take.

I think "Datto" was drawing a bit of a long bow in his description of the damage to the engine.
I have seen Landcruisers which have been in accidents where the whole vehicle is barely recognisable, but the engine is pretty much undamaged.
A car engine is a pretty solid object,& if the aircraft was landing, the "pretend" missile wouldn't have all that much in forward speed,or height.
I wonder what his Insurance company's evaluation of the damage was.

Note the year:2000

If we must include ancient history, the Poms unintentionally dropped a few Blue Streaks out of the sky back in the "swinging sixties" before they got it right/ran out of money!
The Yanks managed to lose an Atomic Bomb back round the same time, too! ;D

One? It is a favorite pastime of military around the world to lose nuclear devices or mess them up pretty badly. A scary, very likely incomplete, list is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_nuclear_accidents

I heard Professor Ballard on the radio say that when he found the Titanic he was in fact looking for two US nuclear submarines that had sunk during the cold war in the area the Titanic was and looking for the Titanic was just a cover as there was nuclear warheads on the submarines and they did not want the Russians to get there first. As usual the Americans panicking about a supposed Russian ability which  did not exist.

After peace broke out in the late eighties a mate of mine was at a tank museum in russia, and asked the guide (a col from the russian army who had once commanded an armoured division) what he thought about the quality of western tanks compared to that of the russian tanks.   His reply?

Some times quantity has a quality of its own (22,000 soviet tanks vs 4000 nato tanks)

Isn't that the plot of a Clive Cussler novel?

I saw a documentary on WWII tanks that pointed out that the German Tiger tanks were superior in just about every way to the American Sherman tank, except in production.  They could just churn out so many more Shermans that it mattered less that they were more frequently blown up.
