LTE CAT-M1 supported by all 4G providers?
« on: December 20, 2018, 04:19:47 pm »
Hello

I needed a 4G LTE modem that I wanted to use with a NanoPi Neo.
Since I only need it for sending/receiving SMS and check emails, I don't need a LTE module with high speed connectivity.
(I know a GSM/GPRS module @ 8$ would be fine, but they have a too high consumption and RF emission)

There are some not too expensive modules on ebay that use a SIM7000E modem.
http://simcomm2m.com/En/module/detail.aspx?id=168

It is compatible with GSM/GPRS and LTE CAT-M1(eMTC) and NB-IoT.
Now, my questions.

Is the LTE CAT-M1 supported by all 4G providers (Europe) or does it need a specific implementation/equipment by the providers?
Do I need a specific M2M subscription???

Thanks

Hi Tantalum,

NB-IoT and M1 networks are currently in testing phases around Europe. Certain cities will have coverage, but you will need a special contract to use any of those networks. Those contracts are only given to industry customers in most cases and require a lot of paperwork as well as minimum orders in the 100s to 1000s SIMs. You could try your luck and contact M2M / B2B sales of your local provider and ask for a free card or an evaluation pack.

Full rollout across will take time. Please also note that the current roaming contracts don't include M1 and NB-IoT as of now, so you won't be able to use the card in any other than your home network.

BR

And PTCRB in the States. Luckily there is no such thing in Europe.
