MM case with " Beauty vanity nails chrome makeup"
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:10:48 am »
My point are to inform you and entertain you , with my story .  :)

I needed to get one multimeter case , so to protect the newcomer Fluke 87-5 ,
even against little accidents , that happens mostly indoors on the repairs bench.

So I started to look for something soft in the begging , and discovered that CD cases of 120CDs wallet type, could be possible used for this task.

I always collect info about three alternatives in any of my problems , and at the end, I pick the best.

By keep searching for the " alternative " No2,  I found  an small aluminum hard case in a local shop,
but inside it was had a microphone !! at the Price of 35 EUR ..   ( I did think to grab the case and toss the microphone ) ... but I kept looking  for the alternative No3 ...

And then found the  " Beauty  vanity  nails " etc etc   ;D ;D

Its a great case, exactly what I had in mind ,  it can protect two multimeters ,
against  flying solder , from the tip of my soldering iron, or accidental drop of tools , on the multimeters.

I did have an small hard case ( picture No2 ) , but hey this one looks and are the perfect one.

The point are that when you need an special item like this, that its possible the solution that you seek,
to be an part or tool , of another profession far from yours , and you will never find it .
Because you did not looked that far ..

This box cost to me  as 22 Euro .
And its the best price for an hard box of this quality .. and size .

Today also got , an similar aluminum tools case "classic size "  , for 28 Euro ,
and the quality are much lower from the "Beauty-vanity one"  , but still good enough .  ( last picture )

Free to comment as always  ;)

No1: The  "Beauty"

No2: The  "bad looking sister "  :D

No3: New Tool case " From the local Praktiker " (made in China)

PS: Dave , do not make any comments for the multimeter pictured on the tool case.
We could possibly have and Chinese viewers .. around..  ;)

LOL hell LOL ..

A case is a case, doesn't matter what it was sold for. The 'real' DMM cases are possibly made by the same manufacturer, just with different branding and mark-up depending on what the marked will bear. It's not like a DMM is much heavier, sharper or more fragile than makeup stuff, so it should serve your purpose just fine. If you ever want to spend a lot of money for a bulletproof case, there's always Pelican ;).

I totally agree ..  :)

About Pelican , I am aware of them , but had never feel the need for something like that.

Still I do own one small sample of the Pelican " bulletproof design " , its an smart-media cards case  ;D

Yes I've often looked around for alternatives from another profession when I could not get what i needed. those cases are popular for building LED UV boxes into by why bother when you can get an old scanner for free !

Hmm.. believe it or not , I came close enough , because of your video..  :)
But I love more the little delicate things (Japanese construction culture ) , and I have learn to babysit them from my childhood.

It was a big step forward for my (technical) culture , to invest in an similar US made one (emotionally) ,
I started to like the 87-V, even if it does not swim or flying ,  like the Fluke 28-II brother.   ;D ;D ;D

why bother when you can get an old scanner for free !

Thats a great idea !!

You can remove the glass , and even add foam in it, so to lift the DMM at the eye level,
and you can paint it too , with any color you like .

The only neg about it, is that they are very long.  :D

Never seen an A5 scanner , this would be right on, for the job.

Its too bad that you do not see anymore , the hard leather cases , that some old high quality multimeters had.

Another possible alternative , could be some cases made for the Megger - insulation testers.
But even those , its a matter of luck , if you find on eBay, just the case.

There is no need to say that any one who has a link of an manufacturer or an retailer ,
who is specialized in such cases, he " must " post it here .

As about me its time to move my tools from the old case in the new ..
Its a boring job, but I have to do it..   ;)

Finally arrived the beauty  ;D

I had guess correctly, about the size that I was looking for.     ;)

I had some black foam , and did my first experiment about placement.
I had order the TPAK belt and one set of TL72 crocks, so to have all the must have accessories.
In the picture are the instrument + the TP88 pins set , and my own designed part ASHB  ;),   Additional . Support. Holster . Base .
More info here.. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=455.0

So as soon I will have all the parts at hand ( TPAK + TL72 ) I will do the final internal design about proper placement, in this box.

Picture ..  :)

Few tips about all of you who thinks to make your own customized multimeter case.  ;)

I found some links on Ebay .. for you .. One seller claims to be Australian ..

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/sellchart/m.html?_nkw=7.8%22+Airsoft+AEG&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3911.m270.l1313&_odkw=&_osacat=0&bkBtn=

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/tactical-gears-store/m.html?_nkw=7.8%22+Airsoft+AEG&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3911.m270.l1313&_odkw=&_osacat=0&bkBtn=

The one that I got with curved aluminum, looks to be sold as case for the remote control of helicopters,
and looks more expensive than the above classic design.

If your DMM is smaller than a Fluke 87-5 , then there is many  other solutions for you,
many  smaller cases for "game pads "  Nitendo and such are available too.

Any way , its up to any one to select the size.

About formating the foam ,  at the shape of the small accessories  , its an art by it self as a task.
But if you do not share your own tips , about it , I am not going  to say a word ..  ;D

i got the hard case about similar to your posted picture above, it was my camcorder's protector, now the cam is in custom made drybox, and the case has become protector for my variety of batt chargers since my last experience one of the charger broke down due to ants infesting inside while i just put them open air. just as my DMMs right now, i dont think ants will manage to get inside :P

What did you use to cut the foam which holds the beauty and its mates  :-\

I got lucky and found foam that was shaped for other use ,
and with some easy tailoring ( sharp blade) , I just cut only the length that I needed.

For those foams there is an mechanical knife ( power tool with moving blade ) ,
most professionals who works daily with foam haves it.
But its damn expensive to get ( 400- 1000 $ as average retail ).

For the very hard formed foam , I had see electrical knifes
( Thin wire installed over a large metal fork ( imagine an guitar with a single chord ),
powered with lots of Amperes so to get extremely hot , and actually melts the foam )
And it does produce an fine cut too.

About making shapes on the foam , they do that also by the use of extreme heat .
In my case, i had use an very sharp blade for the major part of my art work ,
and my hot iron  ( soldering) , for the final details (smoothing things).

Agilent U1272A - a second bonus .. but then, have you made search progress  ;D ?

I did, I did, Agilent has all ready an very similar ,
and almost identical case like my " Beauty  vanity etc etc " for it ,
retails about 130$ , and most retailers does not offer it at all .

Looks identical with my large tool case , pictured at the first page,
with out the foam.
And I got it for much less.

I'm an old guy ... and I notice you speak of a using an old scanner as a UV Box. We used to use a UV lamp to erase EPROM ...
what is a UV box & what is it's use  ??? ?

Thanks!
Doug

You must be confusing me with someone else ,
I do not use a old scanner as a UV Box.

Any way, here is an picture of the Official Agilent case.

In a competition for the worst pun and the worst foto-editing i would get the first prize  ;D

Hello citizen of Bavaria .  :)

Your case is a bit larger for my taste,  but still acceptable .
(Thanks God it has the correct inner orientation for the DMM.)

But please do not say how much you payed for it , you will scare the children s  ;D

About the case that I primarily found ,
I did found some info about it , like manufacturer and model ,
but the search for finding on the internet the company it self or retailers ,
had failed.
Looks like dead end, that stops in the mainland of China.
company: ARTWILL
Model: TB-0162
